Louro seasonal overview

Best Surf Season (October - March)

The North Atlantic's storm machine starts cranking in October and doesn't let up until spring. As low pressure systems roll east along the 40-50°N storm track, Louro receives a steady diet of powerful, long-period ground swell. Average wave heights climb from 3ft (1.0m) in September to 5-6ft (1.5-1.8m) through winter, with wave periods pushing 12-13s. The key to scoring at this SW-facing beach is catching the swells from the S-SSW-SW-WSW window while the northerly offshore flow (N-NNE-NE-ENE) keeps the faces clean. When those two line up, deep winter at Louro is as good as it gets. The NAO matters too: when it tilts negative, storms dive farther south and feed more S/SW swell into the Iberian corner. Still, many storms send winds from S/SSW/SW/WSW, which can quickly chop up an otherwise perfect swell.

Fair Surf Season (April - May, September)

These transitional months serve up smaller but still rideable surf. The Azores High begins to build through April and May, and storm tracks weaken, dropping average wave heights to 3-4ft (1.0-1.3m) with periods of 8-9.5s. The window for clean waves narrows, but the mix of fading W/NW swell and occasional S/SW pulses can deliver surprisingly fun sessions, especially when light N/NE winds line up. September is the reverse, with the first autumn storms starting to inject energy back into the Atlantic.

Low Surf Season (June - August)

Summer is the slow season at Louro. Persistent NW/NNW swell trains keep the ocean alive but undersized, with average heights around 2-3ft (0.8-0.9m) and short-period, fat waves. The Azores High dominates and the North Atlantic storm track retreats to Iceland, so quality ground swell becomes rare. Despite strong NNE/NE offshore breezes in the afternoons, the lack of size and period makes Louro a groveling spot until autumn. The few exceptions come when a stray S/SW pulse sneaks past the summer ridge and offers a brief window of shape.
