Best Surf Season (October - March)
The North Atlantic storm track powers up through autumn and winter, and Playa de Los Caballos sits right in the firing line. From October through March, average swell heights run between 1.6m (5ft) and 2.1m (7ft), with average periods of 11.3 to 12.9 seconds. That is proper groundswell, almost always from the WNW to NW quadrant that this west-facing beach needs. Add ideal wind windows that reach 51% in October, and you have the most consistent period for clean, powerful surf. The downside is weather: strong lows bring rain, cooler air and occasional W/NW winds, but the windows between systems are pure gold.
Fair Surf Season (April, May & September)
These are transitional months. The Azores High is either building or breaking down, so the North Atlantic low pressure train is less reliable. Average swells drop to 1.2-1.5m (4-5ft) and periods sit around 10.0-10.8s. Still, the NW and NNW swell windows dominate, and on the many light-wind days the waves are clean, fun-sized and rippable. Water temperatures are on the rise in May and September, making a 3/2 wetsuit and thinner hoods comfortable for most.
Low Surf Season (June - August)
Summer sees the Azores High take control and the storm track retreat north. Average swell heights bottom out at around 1.0m (3ft), with average periods of 8.9-9.3s. This is mostly windswell and low-energy background swell from the NW, lacking the punch of winter. Mornings with light or favourable wind can still offer fun, grovelly longboard waves, but the heaviest days of the year are unlikely. If you are chasing quality, summer is best kept for travel elsewhere.
