Best Surf Season (October - March)
The North Atlantic roars to life from October through March, and Playa de Meron is right on the firing line. The mid-latitude storm track repeatedly spools up extratropical cyclones across the open Atlantic, sending large, long-period groundswell toward the north coast of Spain. Average swell heights sit in the 1.5-2.0m (5-6.5ft) range with average periods of 11-13s, and the spot is well exposed to the dominant NW, WNW and NNW swells. The ideal offshore wind window from S, SSW and SW also peaks during this stretch, with ideal wind percentages ranging from 30-41 percent. The exact latitude of the North Atlantic storm track, often reflected in the NAO index, decides whether these systems deliver their energy to northern Spain or get shunted toward the British Isles; winters with a southward-shifted jet stream are the ones that produce the real gold here. This is the reliable, heavy, pumping season at Playa de Meron.
Fair Surf Season (April & September)
April and September are the classic shoulder months. The surf is still very much alive, but the average size dips to roughly 1.3-1.4m (4-5ft) and the average wave period settles around 10-10.7s. The same NW and NNW directions continue to dominate, yet the storms are either weakening as spring high pressure builds or just beginning to reawaken after the summer lull. Ideal offshore wind percentages fall to 21-23 percent, so clean, glassy conditions become more of a bonus than the norm. These months can still deliver excellent surf when a late-season low or early autumn frontal system lines up, but they sit a clear step below winter in terms of power and consistency.
Low Surf Season (May - August)
From May through August, Playa de Meron enters its summer slumber. The North Atlantic storm track retreats to higher latitudes, and average swell heights drop to 1.0-1.2m (3-4ft) with average periods of 8.7-9.8s. The swell direction remains dominated by NW and NNW, but most of the energy is shorter-period windswell and weaker groundswell rather than deep, powerful winter waves. Ideal offshore wind percentages fall to just 9-18 percent as thermal NE, ENE, and NW breezes kick in through the day. Expect fun-sized, punchy summer surf at best, usually on the dawn patrol before the wind messes up the surface. It is not a complete flat season, but it is definitely the low-quality portion of the year at this spot.
