Best Surf Season (October - March)

The North Atlantic roars to life from October through March, and Playa de Meron is right on the firing line. The mid-latitude storm track repeatedly spools up extratropical cyclones across the open Atlantic, sending large, long-period groundswell toward the north coast of Spain. Average swell heights sit in the 1.5-2.0m (5-6.5ft) range with average periods of 11-13s, and the spot is well exposed to the dominant NW, WNW and NNW swells. The ideal offshore wind window from S, SSW and SW also peaks during this stretch, with ideal wind percentages ranging from 30-41 percent. The exact latitude of the North Atlantic storm track, often reflected in the NAO index, decides whether these systems deliver their energy to northern Spain or get shunted toward the British Isles; winters with a southward-shifted jet stream are the ones that produce the real gold here. This is the reliable, heavy, pumping season at Playa de Meron.
