Playa de Traba

Traba is a fickle but rewarding sand-bottom beachbreak, offering both left and right peaks that shift with the ever-changing sandbars. The waves here are far from predictable, but when conditions align, the sets unfurl across a long, pristine stretch of coastline that remains blissfully uncrowded—practically empty for most of the year. With a vast beach and often offshore winds, it’s a quiet gem for surfers looking to escape the crowds, though the sandbars demand patience and a willingness to hunt for the best shape. Best on a mid-to-long period swell, with a preference for northwesterly or westerly swells, and ideally timed for mid-to-low tide to connect the faster sections. Traba is not for beginners; the rips and shifting banks require solid intermediate skills to make the most of its fickle nature.

Best Surf Season (October - March)

Playa de Traba is a classic North Atlantic winter wave magnet. As the Azores High retreats and the polar front storm track sags south, the Bay of Biscay and the exposed Costa da Morte receive a near-constant procession of WNW, NW and NNW groundswells. Average swells build to 9-11ft (2.8-3.3m) with periods in the powerful 11-13s range, and the offshore wind window (WSW, SW, SSW, S) is open 20-27% of the time. This is the bread and butter season: hefty, lined-up sandbar peaks with clean offshore texture when low pressure is well positioned over the Bay of Biscay or France.
