Best Surf Season (October - March)
Rodiles is a north-facing beach in the heart of Asturias, and it comes alive when the North Atlantic starts throwing serious groundswell toward the Bay of Biscay. From October through March the average surf size holds in the 4-6ft (1.2-1.8m) range, with wave periods climbing past 11 seconds on a regular basis. That is the meat of the north coast surf year. The single best window is December through February, when the average period reaches 12.3-12.6 seconds and offshore wind odds peak in the 51-61% range. The prevailing NW/NNW swell direction is perfect for this stretch of sand, but the knife's edge is always the wind: a clean, groomed day at Rodiles requires southerly or southwesterly offshore flow. When the Atlantic storm track lines up, a positive NAO pattern sends repeated low pressure systems toward the UK and Biscay, delivering powerful, long-period NW swell with enough S/SSW wind days to make Rodiles absolutely firing.
Fair Surf Season (April - May & September)
The shoulder seasons do not have the same raw power, but they still offer rideable surf. April and May see average heights fall from about 4ft (1.3m) to 3ft (1m), and period drops below 11 seconds, though clean NW/NNW pulses in the 2-5ft (0.5-1.5m) range are common enough to keep a shortboard interesting. September is the turning point: water is still warm at around 20°C, average swell climbs back above 3ft (1m), and the period strengthens to 10.2 seconds as the first autumn lows begin to form. These months reward flexibility-watch for the windows between high pressure and afternoon sea breeze.
Low Surf Season (June - August)
June, July and August are the slow months. The Azores High blocks the storm tracks, average swell heights drop to around 3ft (0.9m), and periods hover around 9 seconds. Most run is short-period NW/NNW windswell in the 2-4ft (0.5-1.2m) range, often chopped by NE/ENE winds and thermal sea breezes. The occasional wandering summer cold front can produce a fun, lined-up day, but consistency is poor. Beginners and longboarders will find the gentler summer waves, but the hardcore surfers know this is the time for travel or tuning equipment.
