Best Surf Season (August - October)

While the Superbank faces north and ideally requires swell from north through northwest directions, the data reveals a unique window during the late winter and spring months where a greater prevalence of north-northeast and north swell energy arrives. Combined with a slight uptick in average swell heights, this period offers the highest probability of rideable, albeit modest, surf. The trade-off comes with less frequent offshore winds, as the southerly breeze becomes more erratic, but when a crisp S/SSW flow aligns with a pulse of north groundswell, the bank can produce clean, rippable walls in the 1-1.5m range. Expect mostly average 7-9s periods, providing punchy but not overly powerful waves.

Fair Surf Season (November - January)

As summer approaches, the north swell window narrows, but the wind regime becomes slightly more favorable. November through January sees a higher percentage of days with ideal offshore southerly winds (S/SSW), cleaning up the surface and creating smooth conditions. However, the swell composition shifts almost entirely to easterly quadrants, which the north-facing bank cannot fully harness. Wave heights linger around 1m with short periods, leading to small, grovelly waves that are best suited for longboards or high-performance shortboards on a good day. Occasional cyclonic pulses from the Coral Sea can inject some north-east swell, but these are rare.

Low Surf Season (February - July)

From late summer through mid-winter, the Superbank experiences its most challenging surf conditions. Optimal north swell drops to a mere whisper, with the vast majority of swell arriving from the east and southeast – directions that are essentially blocked by the north-facing orientation. Wave heights average only 0.9-1.1m, and periods are short, often below 9s, resulting in weak, messy waves. Although the offshore wind frequency is decent (especially in May), without a proper swell source, those clean days produce tiny, unrideable peaks. This is the time for micro-session gear or a trip elsewhere. The few surfable days come from rare north pulses that sneak through, but they are fleeting.
