Best Surf Season (November – March)

Winter in the Ionian Sea brings the most consistent swell and the highest percentage of offshore wind for Ammoudia. Deep Atlantic and Mediterranean low-pressure systems track across the region, firing up long-period swell from the SW to WNW window. November through March see average wave heights hovering around 0.7m to 0.8m, with periods reaching 5.5-6s. The offshore wind machine – blowing from NE to ESE – becomes dominant, keeping the face clean and the lines organized. This is when Ammoudia really turns on, offering punchy, fun-sized waves that can occasionally jump into the pump zone when a proper storm aligns.

Fair Surf Season (October & April)

Transition months where the Mediterranean begins to change gears. October still sees some residual summer heat, but the first autumn lows start to rekindle the swell, while April experiences a last gasp of winter energy before the summer lull. Ideal wind percentages drop to around 20%, but when the synoptic setup cooperates, you can score clean, waist-to-shoulder-high waves on the better days.

Low Surf Season (May – September)

Summer in the Ionian is dominated by the Azores High and persistent thermal low-pressure. Swell becomes small and weak – average heights barely reach 0.4m with periods below 4.5s. The wind patterns shift, with strong daily sea breezes from the SW to WNW (onshore) ruling the afternoon. Ideal offshore wind (NE-ESE) drops to a mere 5–12%. Waves are mostly micro, choppy, and unsurfable, although the rare wave from a distant storm or a crisp morning offshore can offer a fleeting grovel session for the dedicated.

November: The Winter Engine Restarts

November is where things really kick off. Average swell height climbs to 0.7m, period to 5.6s, and ideal wind to 34%. Swell from the prime SW-WNW window (SW 15%, WSW 8.8%, W 4.5%, WNW 8.9%) totals 37.2%, with plenty of 0.5-1.5m waves. The offshore wind from NE-ESE dominates almost 50% of the time – perfect for grooming the faces. Low-pressure systems become more frequent, sending long-period swell that wraps into the bay. Surf sessions become regular again, with punchy, fun waves that can push into the firing zone on bigger days. This is the start of the best months.
