Best Surf Season (October - March)

The winter months see the Aegean Sea come to life as frequent low-pressure systems track across the Mediterranean, generating a steady diet of north and northwest swell. With average wave heights ranging from 1.0 to 1.3 meters and periods hovering around 5 seconds, the surf is often punchy and rideable but rarely powerful. The crucial factor is wind: these months offer the highest probability of offshore conditions (from the south to southwest quadrant), though the percentage remains low—only 3 to 7% of the time. Still, when a high pressure settles south of Greece, light south winds align with a solid N-NE groundswell, Apollonas can produce fun, rippable waves in the shoulder-high range. The best chance for a session lies in watching the synoptic charts for a brief window of south wind cleansing the northerly swell.

Fair Surf Season (April - May & September)

The transition months bring a shift in the weather patterns. The thermal low over Anatolia begins to strengthen, initiating the summer north wind regime, but occasional frontal passages still deliver swell. Average heights drop to 0.7-0.9 meters with periods around 4.5-4.8 seconds, yielding mostly small, groveling waves. Offshore wind percentages hover around 5-7% in spring and drop to 2% in September. While quality is elusive, these months offer the best chance for clean, smaller waves on a longboard or funboard when the wind cooperates.

Low Surf Season (June - August)

The summer months are the most challenging for surfers at Apollonas. The persistent Etesian winds blow from the north, directly onshore, ruining what little swell is present. The swell itself is dominated by short-period, local wind waves from the NNW with an average height around 1.0m in July and August, but these are accompanied by strong onshore winds over 30kph up to 30-50% of the time. The result is choppy, messy conditions with barely any rideable waves. Offshore wind is virtually non-existent (2% of the time). This is the time to travel elsewhere or take a break from surfing this spot.

October: Autumn Swell Returns, Wind Still Fickle

October marks a noticeable increase in average swell to 1.0m (period 4.9s), driven by a resurgence of N (19.9%) and NNW (40.7%) swell from deepening Mediterranean lows. The wind, however, remains stubbornly northerly: north winds blow 40.4% of the time, the highest of any month, with NNW adding 15.3%. Ideal offshore wind is just 3% of the time—the worst in the autumn season. Yet the swell quality improves: the 1.5-2.5m range from the N accounts for a combined 8.5%, meaning when the wind does swing south (often during the passage of a front), Apollonas can pump with head-high, powerful waves. Keep a close eye on the synoptic charts for those fleeting but rewarding windows.
