During these months, the ITCZ migrates south, allowing the dry, offshore Harmattan winds (from N, NNE, NE, NNW) to penetrate the coastline with increasing frequency. While average swell heights hover around the 0.9–1.0m mark, the wave period remains solidly in the 10.5–10.8s range—powerful, long-period groundswell that wraps in from the South and SSW. The result? Clean, glassy mornings with fun-sized, rippable waves. December leads the pack with a 9% window of ideal offshore winds, and January peaks at 10%. It's not about size; it's about quality. When the stars align, you get pristine, offshore lines peeling down the beach—a true gift for the patient surfer.

Fair Surf Season (February - May & October)

As the ITCZ begins its northward migration in February, the reliable Harmattan starts to falter. Onshore breezes from the SW and SSW become more dominant, reducing the percentage of clean surf opportunities to 3–6%. However, the swell doesn't take a holiday. February and March see average wave heights holding at 0.9–1.0m, while April and May ramp up to a solid 1.1–1.2m with periods stretching to 11.5–11.7s. This is the heart of the Southern Ocean storm track, firing long-period, groundswell trains that march straight into the bay. The challenge is the wind: mostly onshore, but occasional prefrontal northerlies or early morning calms can offer short windows of clean surf. May is the standout, with a 6% ideal wind statistic and a high percentage of 1–1.5m waves. October mirrors this transitional feel, with the first hints of the Harmattan returning and average swell sizes still a respectable 1.1m.

Low Surf Season (June - September)

The deep tropical winter sets in, and Assinie feels the full brunt of the Southwest Monsoon. The ITCZ is parked well north, driving relentless onshore winds from the SW and SSW that blow 40–50% of the time. Ideal offshore wind conditions drop to a paltry 0–1%, making clean surf a rare commodity. That's a shame, because this is actually the largest swell season—average heights hit 1.3m, wave periods peak at 11.6–11.7s, and there are occasional pulses exceeding 1.5m. The waves have power and push, but they arrive wrapped in choppy, wind-affected faces. Every now and then, a weak cold front or a brief lull in the trades can coax out a few hours of semi-clean conditions, but for the most part, it's a battle against the elements. Save your holiday leave for the winter months unless you're a glutton for punishment—or a kiter.

July: Peak Winter, Tough Conditions

Welcome to the heart of the West African winter. Swell averages 1.3m with an 11.6s period, and the energy is there—65.2% from S and 34.6% from SSW, with a notable 9.7% of S swell in the 1.5–2m range. The waves have serious push. But the wind is a nightmare for surfers. Ideal offshore conditions are a mere 1% of the time. The SW and SSW winds combine for a staggering 44.6% and 31.4% respectively, with many days seeing 20–30kph gusts from these directions. The result is lumpy, wind-chop with occasional closeouts. The rare northerly wind (barely 0.1%) is a mirage. July is for well....maybe for bodyboarding or just enjoying the beach. If you must surf, look for a standout sandbar that offers some shelter from the prevailing southwesterly, or wait for a dead-calm overcast day (happens, but rarely).
