Fair Surf Season (February - May & October)

As the ITCZ begins its northward migration in February, the reliable Harmattan starts to falter. Onshore breezes from the SW and SSW become more dominant, reducing the percentage of clean surf opportunities to 3–6%. However, the swell doesn't take a holiday. February and March see average wave heights holding at 0.9–1.0m, while April and May ramp up to a solid 1.1–1.2m with periods stretching to 11.5–11.7s. This is the heart of the Southern Ocean storm track, firing long-period, groundswell trains that march straight into the bay. The challenge is the wind: mostly onshore, but occasional prefrontal northerlies or early morning calms can offer short windows of clean surf. October: The Recovery Begins
