Best Surf Season (May - June & September - October)

Aviones, a north-facing break on the Puerto Rican coast, is a classic trade wind swell magnet. However, the data reveals a challenging reality: the vast majority of swell arrives from the east and east-southeast, a direction that struggles to wrap effectively into this north-oriented pocket. The wind, predominantly from the same quadrant, often blows side-onshore or cross-shore, keeping conditions generally small and bumpy. The 'best' surf season corresponds to the transitional months when the trade winds ease and a higher percentage of light, variable or southerly offshore breezes occur. May and June see ideal wind conditions nearly half the time, while September and October offer a similar window. During these months, if you catch a rare pulse of longer-period swell from the north Atlantic or a local shift to southerly winds, Aviones can serve up fun, clean waves in the waist-to-chest high range.

Fair Surf Season (March - April & November)

March, April, and November fall into a 'fair' category. The trade winds are a bit more active, with ideal wind percentages dropping to between 31% and 37%. Swell heights remain modest, averaging 0.8m, and wave periods hover around 6 seconds, indicative of short-period, locally generated windswell rather than distant groundswell. The occasional afternoon sea breeze or a transient low-pressure system can stir up some ridable conditions, but consistency is low. Surfers will need to be patient and ready to pounce on the fleeting moments when the wind aligns from the south and a small east swell leaks in with a bit of power.

Low Surf Season (December - February & July - August)

The low surf season spans the winter months (December through February) and the heart of summer (July and August). During these periods, the trade winds are at their strongest or the wind is persistently from the east-northeast, resulting in the lowest percentage of offshore conditions (25% in December, 28% in January). Swell heights are still around 0.8-0.9m, but the combination of short period (6.0-6.2s) and onshore/cross-shore wind makes for messy, choppy conditions. The north-facing orientation offers no protection from the prevailing wind, and the swell direction from the east rarely produces clean, lined-up waves. Aviones is best left to the kooks and beginners during these months, or saved for a flat day session on a longboard.

October: Late Season Sweet Spot

October continues the positive trend with ideal wind at 45%. The trade winds are weaker, with E at 28.8% and ESE at 26.4%, and a notable increase in SE (13.2%) and SSE (6.1%) winds. Swell remains small, averaging 0.7m at 5.9s, dominated by ESE (50.5%) and E (31.6%). The lighter wind regime allows the east swell to clean up more frequently. October, along with May and June, is one of the best months for consistent, clean, if small, surf at Aviones. The north-facing beach benefits from the lack of strong onshore flow, and long-period remnants of early season hurricanes can occasionally sneak in from the southeast.
