Best Surf Season (October - March)

The North Pacific winter pattern locks in from October onward, bringing a consistent diet of long-period, medium-to-large swells from the SSW and S. This is prime time at Barra de la Cruz. Strong high-pressure systems set up over the northern Gulf of Mexico and the southern US, channeling northerly and northwesterly offshore winds that groom the faces to perfection. Average wave heights hover in the fun-to-pumping 1.5-2.5m range with periods often exceeding 12s, and ideal wind conditions occur 55-62% of the time. The combination of reliable swell and clean offshore flow makes these six months the undisputed window for world-class waves.

Fair Surf Season (April - September)

As the winter pattern relaxes, the frequency of offshore winds drops slightly, but the swell machine keeps grinding. During April through September, the Pacific remains active, with the average swell height actually peaking at 1.6-1.7m and periods holding strong in the 13-14s range. The catch is that the percentage of ideal offshore wind (N, NNE, NW, NNW) falls to between 41% and 50%, and you'll see more spells of lighter cross-shore or even onshore breezes from the SSW and SW. Still, the sheer volume of south swell – especially from the SSW – means that even on less-than-perfect wind days, there's still a fun, rippable wave to be had. This is a great time for those willing to wait for the wind windows.

January: Peak Winter Consistency

January delivers the full force of the North Pacific winter. Average swell height sits at 1.4m, but don't let that fool you – periods average 11.0s, and the real action comes from the SSW direction, which accounts for 22.5% of all swell energy, mostly in the 1-1.5m range. The NE also has a strong showing (22.2%) but that's a less favorable direction for our SSE-facing beach; it's the SW to S swells that wrap in best. The wind is ideal 55% of the time, with the NNE and NE quadrants dominating the offshore flow. Look for crisp, groomed waves when high pressure locks in over the Gulf of Mexico.
