Best Surf Season (October - March)

The heart of the North Atlantic storm track delivers consistent, powerful swells to Belmar. Average wave heights hover around 1.3m with periods often pushing into the 7-8 second range, providing punchy, rideable waves. The dominant swell directions are from the E and ESE, which line up perfectly with our east-southeast facing beach. Meanwhile, synoptic systems frequently trigger strong offshore winds from the W and WNW, cleaning up the faces. This is when Belmar turns on—expect solid, fun-sized surf with occasional pumping days as Nor'easters set up in the ideal fetch.

Fair Surf Season (April & September)

During these shoulder months, the ocean is in transition. April still sees a high percentage of E/ESE swell (over 27% combined), but the wind regime becomes more variable with an increase in onshore southerly flow. September benefits from a resurgence of tropical and early-season extratropical energy, with average wave periods peaking at 8.3s—the highest of the year. However, wind consistency drops, and the window for clean offshore conditions narrows. You'll find plenty of fun, rippable days, but the magic isn't as reliable as mid-winter.

Low Surf Season (May - August)

Summer settles over the Jersey Shore. Average swell heights drop to 0.8–1.0m, and the dominant swell direction shifts to SSE and S—a poor angle for Belmar's exposure. Although the percentage of ideal offshore wind days is actually quite high (up to 50% in July), the waves are often too small and weak to surf with enthusiasm. The average period remains around 7 seconds, but the lack of size and direction means constant groveling. If you're on a log or longboard, there are fun mornings with light westerlies, but for shortboard performance, it's a waiting game until autumn.

June: Small and Soggy

June bottoms out with an average height of just 0.9m and a period of 6.9s. Swell overwhelmingly arrives from the SSE (26.1%) and S (24.0%), both onshore directions that produce weak, crumbly waves. Though ideal wind conditions hit 45%—the highest of the spring—the swell is too small and poorly oriented to generate quality surf. Summer crowds begin to swarm the beach, but the water is mostly flat. Look for a stray tropical disturbance to provide a brief pulse.
