Best Surf Season (May - August)
For Cactus, the winter months from May through August deliver the most consistent and high-quality surf. The Southern Ocean is at its most active, churning out frequent, long-period SW and SSW groundswells that hit this south-west facing beach with maximum efficiency. Average wave heights sit in the 1.8-2.0m range, with periods often exceeding 13s, translating to powerful, lined-up sets that are known to light up the reefs and points along this stretch of coast. Critically, this period also sees the highest percentage of offshore NE to E winds, driven by the northward migration of the subtropical ridge and the positioning of slow-moving highs in the Tasman Sea. While the wind is never perfect every day, windows of clean conditions are much more frequent, making this the prime time to score Cactus at its best. Look for days with a solid SW swell and a morning or evening NE breeze for truly memorable sessions.
Fair Surf Season (March - April & September - October)
The shoulder seasons offer a mixed bag of quality swell and challenging wind patterns. March and April still pick up a good share of Southern Ocean groundswells, with solid sizes and long periods in the 12-13s range. However, the ideal offshore wind percentages begin to drop from the winter peak, as the trade wind influence starts to strengthen. You'll find plenty of rideable waves, but may have to hunt for the cleanest corners during the tighter offshore windows. September and October see a resurgence of swell energy as the transition into spring brings renewed storm activity, but winds become more variable with an increasing southerly component. Still, when a strong high parks east of the continent and aligns with a robust SW swell, the quality can be right up there with the best of winter.
Low Surf Season (November - February)
Summer is the most challenging time for consistent surf at Cactus. The swell-generating belts shift south, leading to smaller, less frequent waves – average heights hover around 1.7m but with more variability and shorter periods as the dominant S and SSE swell orientations become more prominent. The real story, however, is the wind. The prevailing south-east trade winds and sea breezes dominate, blowing directly onshore or creating cross-shore chop that mushes out the wave faces. The ideal offshore wind window is at its narrowest, often below 12% frequency. While an occasional tropical interaction or a rare late-season groundswell can produce a fun day, the overall reliability is low. If you're chasing waves in these months, be prepared for early morning glass-offs or look for a different direction that might handle the summer wind regimes better.
