Best Surf Season (October - March)

During these months, the North Atlantic delivers consistent, powerful swell to Cadiz's west-facing coastline. Average wave heights range from 1.2m to 1.6m, with long periods averaging 9.5-11.6s, thanks to strong extratropical storms tracking across the North Atlantic. The percentage of ideal offshore winds (from the east quadrant) peaks between 31% and 40%, offering frequent clean conditions. The NAO index often plays a crucial role; a negative NAO can push the storm track further south, sending larger, more consistent swell into the Gulf of Cadiz. This is when the spot truly shines, with pumping surf on offer.

Fair Surf Season (April - May & September)

The transition months see a noticeable drop in both swell size and period as the North Atlantic storm track weakens. April and May average 1.1-1.3m with periods around 8-9s, while September sees a slight resurgence. Ideal wind frequency drops to 20-26%, but windows of clean, fun-sized surf still occur, especially when high pressure sets up over the Iberian Peninsula, generating easterly breezes. This is a good time for longboarders or those seeking a relaxed session.

Low Surf Season (June - August)

Summer is the quietest period. Average swell heights drop to 0.8-0.9m with short periods of 6.7-7.4s. The dominant swell comes from the WNW and NW, but often lacks energy. Ideal offshore winds occur only 20-21% of the time, and when they do, the waves are usually small and weak. The Mediterranean influence and high pressure aloft suppress storm activity. Micro-surf or groveling conditions prevail, rarely exceeding fun-sized. It's a good season for a surf trip elsewhere or to enjoy the beach lifestyle.

March: Transition Begins, but Still Strong

March sees a slight decline in average surf quality, but remains solid. Average swell height holds at 1.5m with a period of 10.7s. The dominant swell directions are WNW (35.3%) and W (20.0%), still delivering good waves. Ideal wind frequency falls to 28%, with easterly winds (E 8.1%, ESE 17.7%) still a common source of offshore flow. As spring approaches, the storm track starts to shift north, so the consistency of large swell diminishes. Nonetheless, March can still produce pumping sessions when the right combination of long-period W swell and offshore winds lines up.
