Best Surf Season (October - March)

The North Atlantic roars to life during these months, delivering the largest average swell heights (1.0-1.1m) to the Calais coastline. While the average wave period remains short (5.1-5.3s), a higher frequency of N and NW swells aligns with the spot's exposure. However, the dominant wind directions shift with passing low-pressure systems, and onshore N to NNW winds often spoil the shape. The real gems occur when a high-pressure cell over Scandinavia directs offshore S to SSW winds across the Channel, turning winter slop into clean, punchy waves in the 1-1.5m range. The percentage of ideal wind is only 6-7%, so patience is key.

Fair Surf Season (April, May & September)

As the jet stream weakens, average swell heights drop to 0.7-0.8m and periods linger around 5s. Spring and early autumn still see occasional pulses of NW swell, but the wind regime becomes more variable. April and May bring increasingly frequent SW to WSW winds which often blow onshore. Still, when a ridge of high pressure settles over France, S to SSW breezes can align with fading winter groundswell, offering small but clean fun-sized waves. September sees a slight uptick in swell size compared to summer, with 1-1.5m waves appearing more often, though periods remain short.

Low Surf Season (June - August)

Summer is the doldrums for Calais surfers. Average swell height bottoms out at 0.6m and periods drop to 4.7-4.8s – barely enough to break on the sandbars. The dominant swell directions are WSW and SSW, which are inefficient for this NW-facing beach. Meanwhile, the thermal low over the continent pumps in persistent SW to WSW winds, creating onshore conditions over 40% of the time. Offshore S to SSW winds become rare. With a meager 5% of hours offering ideal conditions, summer sessions are best left to bodyboarding or windsurfing. Keep the boards in the bag and watch the charts for rare tropical disturbances or deep lows that might slip through.

December: Constant Winter Action

December matches January as the peak of winter swell activity, with an average height of 1.1m and period of 5.2s. Swell from SW (15%) and WSW (13.5%) remains abundant, but look at the NNW contribution – 10.3% – often the sweet spot for Calais. The wind rose shows strong S (7.6%) and SSW (10.6%) winds, but many are moderate to strong. The ideal wind percentage is 7%. Persistent low pressure over the North Sea and Scandinavia can funnel in long-period NW swell, while high pressure over southern Europe provides offshore southerly flow. The result is a higher frequency of rideable days than any other month. Wave heights in the 1-1.5m range occur frequently, and occasionally 1.5-2m pulses arrive with clean 8-10s periods. December is the best bet for consistent surf; just be prepared for cold air and strong currents.
