Low Surf Season (June - August)
Summer is the doldrums for Calais surfers. Average swell height bottoms out at 0.6m and periods drop to 4.7-4.8s – barely enough to break on the sandbars. The dominant swell directions are WSW and SSW, which are inefficient for this NW-facing beach. Meanwhile, the thermal low over the continent pumps in persistent SW to WSW winds, creating onshore conditions over 40% of the time. Offshore S to SSW winds become rare. With a meager 5% of hours offering ideal conditions, summer sessions are best left to bodyboarding or windsurfing.
