In April, autumn begins to cool the continent, and we see a jump in average period to 9.1s with 27% ideal wind — a solid precursor to the winter peak. September, on the other hand, brings the largest average swell of the year at 1.8m, fueled by early-spring storms in the South Pacific and Southern Ocean. However, the wind becomes more unpredictable with only 21% offshore, meaning you'll need to time the frontal passages carefully. Both months offer great potential, but consistency takes a backseat to the core winter months.

Low Surf Season (October - March)

From spring through early autumn, Capao da Canoa goes dormant. Dominant easterly trade winds — from NE to E — blow directly onshore, chopping up the waves and keeping the ideal offshore window below 24%. Swell heights average 1.4-1.5m and periods linger around 8-8.8s, producing mostly weak, wind-affected surf. August sees the swell still pumping at 1.7m average, but the wind starts to become a little more easterly again. While ideal offshore percentages remain respectable at 31%, the NE trade winds begin to reassert themselves, reducing the number of clean sessions. Swell direction is more spread across ENE through S, keeping the waves consistent if slightly less organized. The periods average 9.2s, still providing good power. Keep an eye on synoptic weather patterns — the best days come when a strong cold front clears the coast and west winds follow. Those sets can be overhead and hollow. As winter winds down, pick your days carefully and you'll still score.
