Best Surf Season (June - August)

The winter months offer the highest concentration of long-period, powerful groundswell, with average heights peaking at 2.8-2.9m and periods consistently above 12 seconds. While the majority of this energy arrives from the SW to SSW – far from ideal for the NW-facing breaks – the chance of a rare WNW to NW swell increases to nearly 1% of observations. This is when the Cape truly fires. Offshore winds from the S to SSE dominate thanks to a persistent high-pressure cell over the interior, creating clean, lined-up walls. The main issue remains the low frequency of optimal swell direction, but when the stars align, the result is epic, heavy conditions.

Fair Surf Season (March - May & September - November)

During the spring and autumn transitions the South Atlantic storm track remains active, delivering solid swell in the 2.4-2.6m range with periods around 12s. The wind regime sees a mix of light offshore flows and occasional northerly onshore breezes, keeping the percentage of ideal wind in the 32-40% range. Swell direction is still dominated by the SW quadrant, but a slight uptick in WNW events (0.3-0.6%) can produce fun, rippable conditions when combined with a southerly offshore. Expect good windows between passing cold fronts, though consistency is lacking.

Low Surf Season (December - February)

The South Atlantic high-pressure belt settles farther south, pushing the storm track away from Cape Town. Average swell heights drop to 2.3m with periods slipping to 11.1-11.4s, and the dominant swell direction remains the unfavorable SW to SSW. Optimal swell from the NW to N is virtually absent. Meanwhile, the frequency of ideal offshore winds falls to just 28%, as the infamous summer SE trade wind (the Cape Doctor) strengthens, but those winds are side-to-onshore for NW-facing breaks. The few clear, windless days offer small, grovelly waves, but overall the surf is lackluster and crowded.

December: Early Summer, Small and Directionally Poor

December returns to full summer conditions: average swell 2.3m, period 11.3s. The swell direction is overwhelmingly SW (27.0%) and SSW (15.6%), with WNW down to a mere 0.1% and NW at 0.1%. Wind is dominated by SSE (30.8%) and SE (16.1%), ideal for offshore flow but often too strong for clean conditions. Ideal wind percentage is 28%. The small, weak swell from the wrong direction, coupled with gusty winds, makes for uninspiring surf. Only the tiniest fraction of days offer a usable wave, and those come when a late-season winter remnant produces a brief flare of NW swell. For most of December, it is a time for longboarders and beginners, as the waves rarely exceed 1.5m and lack any punch.
