Fair Surf Season (March - May & September - November)

During the spring and autumn transitions the South Atlantic storm track remains active, delivering solid swell in the 2.4-2.6m range with periods around 12s. The wind regime sees a mix of light offshore flows and occasional northerly onshore breezes, keeping the percentage of ideal wind in the 32-40% range. Swell direction is still dominated by the SW quadrant, but a slight uptick in WNW events (0.3-0.6%) can produce fun, rippable conditions when combined with a southerly offshore. Expect good windows between passing cold fronts, though consistency is lacking.

Low Surf Season (December - February)

The South Atlantic high-pressure belt settles farther south, pushing the storm track away from Cape Town. Average swell heights drop to 2.3m with periods slipping to 11.1-11.4s, and the dominant swell direction remains the unfavorable SW to SSW. Optimal swell from the NW to N is virtually absent. Meanwhile, the frequency of ideal offshore winds falls to just 28%, as the infamous summer SE trade wind (the Cape Doctor) strengthens, but those winds are side-to-onshore for NW-facing breaks. The few clear, windless days offer small, grovelly waves, but overall the surf is lackluster and crowded.
