Best Surf Season (October - March)

The Mediterranean winter is the prime time for Carnon, when the Gulf of Lion becomes a hotspot for storm activity. During these months, the average swell hovers around 0.6m with periods climbing to 4.6–4.7s - not groundswell, but punchy and rideable. More importantly, the frequency of offshore Mistral winds from the N, NW, and NNW quadrants peaks, blowing cleanly across the SSE-facing beach. The North Atlantic's influence can funnel energy through the gap between the Pyrenees and Massif Central, while local low-pressure systems spinning up in the Med generate SE and S swell - the perfect angle for Carnon. When the Mistral kicks in post-front, the combo of solid 1-1.5m waves and glassy conditions deliver the best surf of the year.

Fair Surf Season (April - May & September)

Spring and early autumn offer a mixed bag. April still carries 0.6m average swell and a 4.6s period, but the Mistral becomes less frequent (7% ideal wind), and the dominant swell shifts more toward S and SSE - good directions, but often accompanied by lighter onshore breezes. May sees a drop in energy (0.5m, 4.2s) as the Mediterranean calm settles in. September shows a slight pulse back up to 0.4m and 3.9s as summer heat fades and early autumn storms begin to stir. These months are hit-or-miss: catch a Mistral event and you might score fun, rippable waves; otherwise expect small, groveling conditions.

Low Surf Season (June - August)

Summer is the doldrums for Carnon. The Mediterranean flatlines with average swell heights dropping to 0.3-0.4m and periods as low as 3.5-3.8s. Ideal offshore wind frequency plummets to just 2%. The dominant swell directions are still S and SSE, but the waves are small and messy - barely enough for a micro longboard. Thermal-driven onshore seabreezes dominate, especially from the S and SSW, which ruin any chance of quality. Unless you're desperate for a paddle, save your energy for the winter months.

January: Mistral magic

January is a solid winter month for Carnon. The average swell sits at 0.6m with a period of 4.6s - not huge, but consistent. The dominant swell directions are from the S (11.0%) and SSE (8.5%), which are optimal for the SSE-facing beach, while SE (9.9%) also contributes. Waves in the 0.5-1m range make up the bulk, with occasional 1-1.5m sets (especially from SE and S). The real savior is the wind: NW (16.5%) and NNW (13.0%) blow offshore and clean up the surf, while N (10.3%) and NNE (10.2%) also help. This is the Mistral season - cold, strong, and offshore. Ideal wind percentage is 8%, the highest of the year. Look for low-pressure systems tracking through the Gulf of Lion to generate S swell, then a post-frontal Mistral to glass it off. Waves in the 1-1.5m range with offshore wind make for fun, shoulder-high surf.
