During May, June, and July, Cave Rock sees its highest percentage of ideal surfing conditions, with offshore winds from the W to NW quadrant blowing a consistent 50-55% of the time. Combined with average swell heights holding steady around 1.7m and wave periods pushing 10-11 seconds, this is the sweet spot. The combination of powerful groundswell and clean, groomed faces sets the stage for world-class waves at this reef break. Fair Surf Season (March - April, August - September)
The shoulder months offer a solid backup plan. During March and April, the winter pattern begins to ramp up, with the first real swells arriving from the SE to SSE direction. The wind, however, is a little more fickle – ideal offshore flow drops to the 26-36% range, and you will need to pick your windows carefully. By August and September, the storm track is still active, but the wind direction starts to shift back toward the onshore E and ESE quadrants more frequently. Still, when the synoptic setup aligns – a passing cold front followed by a strong high-pressure cell in the South Atlantic – the result can be magical: glassy conditions with chest-to-head high waves that peel perfectly along the cave.
Low Surf Season (October - February)
The summer months bring a dramatic shift. The subtropical ridge strengthens and the South Atlantic high pressure dominates, pushing the westerly wind belt south. As a result, the frequency of favorable offshore winds at Cave Rock plummets to a paltry 15-20% from October through February. Waves are still present – average heights hover around 1.6-1.8m – but they are often accompanied by stiff onshore winds out of the NE to E quadrant, which turn the normally crisp waves into choppy, lumpy messes. The wave period also drops below 9 seconds during December and January, meaning weaker, more wind-swell dominant energy. You can still score on rare days when a cut-off low drifts east, but be prepared to sift through a lot of junky conditions. Pick your battles carefully; dawn patrol window with light NW breeze is your only hope.

Autumn fully takes hold. Average swell height holds at 1.7m, but the period reaches a robust 10.0s. The swell distribution shifts southward – SSE (20.0%) and S (14.9%) now compete with the E/ESE quadrants. The frequency of offshore winds jumps to 36% ideal, a significant improvement. The real story is the increase in post-frontal conditions: a cold front passes, the wind whips around to the SW and then W, and the ocean is left with clean, long-period SE to S swell wrapping perfectly into Cave Rock. On those days, waves are solid and rippable, with plenty of power. It's the start of the prime window, though occasional winter storms can still bring too much wind.
