Best Surf Season (May - July)

As the Southern Hemisphere tilts into its winter months, the Indian Ocean springs to life. The subantarctic storm track shifts north, generating a relentless procession of low-pressure systems that fire long-period swell directly into the SE-facing beaches of South Africa. During May, June, and July, Cave Rock sees its highest percentage of ideal surfing conditions, with offshore winds from the W to NW quadrant blowing a consistent 50-55% of the time. Combined with average swell heights holding steady around 1.7m and wave periods pushing 10-11 seconds, this is the sweet spot. The combination of powerful groundswell and clean, groomed faces sets the stage for world-class waves at this reef break. Expect punchy, rippable walls and the occasional pumping set that will have you rethinking your travel plans.

Fair Surf Season (March - April, August - September)

The shoulder months offer a solid backup plan. During March and April, the winter pattern begins to ramp up, with the first real swells arriving from the SE to SSE direction. The wind, however, is a little more fickle – ideal offshore flow drops to the 26-36% range, and you will need to pick your windows carefully. By August and September, the storm track is still active, but the wind direction starts to shift back toward the onshore E and ESE quadrants more frequently. Still, when the synoptic setup aligns – a passing cold front followed by a strong high-pressure cell in the South Atlantic – the result can be magical: glassy conditions with chest-to-head high waves that peel perfectly along the cave.

Low Surf Season (October - February)

The summer months bring a dramatic shift. The subtropical ridge strengthens and the South Atlantic high pressure dominates, pushing the westerly wind belt south. As a result, the frequency of favorable offshore winds at Cave Rock plummets to a paltry 15-20% from October through February. Waves are still present – average heights hover around 1.6-1.8m – but they are often accompanied by stiff onshore winds out of the NE to E quadrant, which turn the normally crisp waves into choppy, lumpy messes. The wave period also drops below 9 seconds during December and January, meaning weaker, more wind-swell dominant energy. You can still score on rare days when a cut-off low drifts east, but be prepared to sift through a lot of junky conditions. Pick your battles carefully; dawn patrol window with light NW breeze is your only hope.

August: Holding On

As winter begins to loosen its grip, August still delivers excellent surf. The average swell height increases to 1.8m – the highest of the year – and the average period remains solid at 10.2s. Swell direction continues to favor S (20.9%) and SSE (16.6%), but there is a notable increase in ENE (14.2%) and E (14.2%) contributions. This suggests a mix of groundswell from the south and more intermediate swells from the east. The ideal wind percentage drops to 40%, a decrease from the winter peak. The onshore NE flow has increased to 15.4%, and the NNE (15.3%) and SSW (16.1%) also play larger roles. The offshore flow from the NW to NNW quadrants is still present but weakening (NW 3.4%, NNW 4.2%, WNW 2.8%, W 2.7%). This is a transitional month: the storm track is pulling away to the south, and the sub-tropical ridge is starting to build. While the swell is often large and powerful, the wind windows become shorter. However, early mornings still frequently offer clean conditions with offshore breezes. Expect some of the biggest sets of the year, but also more variability in quality. The cave can be epic, but you'll need to be flexible and ready to pounce on the good windows.
