Best Surf Season (May - August)

The austral winter transforms Cidreira into a consistent, high-quality surf destination. During these months, the South Atlantic storm track intensifies, generating frequent long-period swell from the E to S quadrants. Crucially, the percentage of offshore wind (from the W, WNW, NW, and WSW) peaks, with June seeing a remarkable 34% of ideal wind conditions. Swell heights average a solid 1.7-1.8m, and wave periods climb into the 9-10s range, delivering punchy, powerful, and rippable waves. The combination of clean offshore winds and a steady diet of ENE to SE groundswell creates the most reliable and enjoyable surf of the year.

Fair Surf Season (March - April & September - November)

These transitional months offer a mixed bag for surfers at Cidreira. The tail end of summer and the onset of winter (March-April) still see moderate swell activity (1.6-1.7m), but ideal wind frequencies are lower (18-22%). Meanwhile, spring (September-November) brings a slight uptick in swell height, especially September with a 2.0m average, but persistent onshore trade winds from the NE and ENE often spoil the party. When a cold front pushes through and delivers a window of offshore winds, the waves can be excellent, but patience is required. September and October, in particular, see ideal wind below 15%, keeping the surf quality inconsistent.

Low Surf Season (December - February)

The height of summer is the most challenging time for consistent, clean surf at Cidreira. High pressure over the South Atlantic locks in persistent NE to E trade winds, creating strong onshore conditions that degrade wave quality. The average swell height dips to 1.5-1.6m, with shorter periods (8.1-8.3s) typical of local windswell. While swell from the ENE and E remains present, it is often accompanied by choppy, messy conditions due to the onshore flow. Only 12-17% of the time does the wind swing offshore, offering brief windows for small, groveling waves on a micro to small scale. This is a period for the patient and the optimist.

October: Spring Winds Wreak Havoc

October is a frustrating month for Cidreira surfers. Swell potential remains high with an average height of 1.9m and a period of 8.6s, generated by energetic spring storms. The ENE (21.4%) and E (16.4%) directions provide plenty of swell. But the wind story is grim: ideal wind is only 14%, with onshore NE (26.6%) and ENE (19.8%) winds blowing relentlessly. These winds often exceed 20 kph, turning the ocean into a choppy mess. The few days when the wind shifts to the W or NW are golden, offering clean, powerful waves in the 1-1.5m range. But these windows are narrow and infrequent, demanding flexibility and a keen eye on the forecast.
