Best Surf Season (October - March)

The North Atlantic roars to life during these months, with Croyde's west-southwest facing beach bearing the brunt of powerful extratropical storms. Average swell heights consistently exceed 1.7m and periods routinely push into the 10-11 second range, delivering the kind of long period groundswells that make the sandbars at Croyde fire. The dominant swell directions from W and WSW are ideal, wrapping into the bay with purpose. While the polar jet stream keeps low pressure systems marching across the UK, the associated onshore winds are the main drawback — ideal offshore conditions from the NE-ENE sector occur only 9-13% of the time. When a high-pressure system settles over Scandinavia, however, it pumps in clean easterlies and those long period W swells become absolutely dreamy. The lack of consistent offshores means you'll have to be patient and pick your days, but the raw energy on offer is unmatched.

Fair Surf Season (April & September)

These transitional shoulder months see a noticeable drop in average swell size and period as the North Atlantic storm track begins to shift. April averages 1.3m at 9.5s, while September sits at 1.3m and 8.8s — still plenty of rideable swell, but the power and consistency of winter is dialed back. The upside? Ideal wind percentages nudge upward to 13-17%, as the clash between lingering winter lows and building spring/summer highs brings more frequent spells of offshore easterlies. Swell from WSW and W still dominates, but the wave heights often stay in that fun, rippable 1-1.5m range. Surfable waist to shoulder high surf is common, and with lighter winds, the crowd factor at Croyde starts to rise. These months offer the best balance between quality and comfort for intermediate surfers.

Low Surf Season (May - August)

Summer is a tough time for Croyde surfers. The Atlantic storm track retreats north, and average swell heights drop to a paltry 1.0-1.1m with periods of 7.9-8.7 seconds — choppy, short period windswell dominates. The vast majority of energy comes from the W and WSW, but without the driving low pressure systems, it's often weak and disorganized. Meanwhile, the Azores High builds, bringing more settled weather but also a persistent WSW-WNW wind component that is directly onshore at Croyde, ruining wave quality. Ideal offshore conditions from the NE-ENE quadrant are rare (10-13% of the time). When a rare frontal system pushes through or a distant tropical storm sends a pulse, there are occasional fun days, but they are few and far between. For consistent waves, this is the time to either travel or take up another sport. The water is warmest, though, and the beach is buzzing with tourists, so if you're happy with knee to waist high weak surf, it can still be a laugh.

December: Peak Winter Grind

December rounds out the year with the highest average swell heights — 2.1m at a classic winter period of 10.6 seconds. Swell from W (21.2%) and WSW (19.9%) lead the way, with a strong injection from SW (5.2%) and even a noticeable increase in ESE and E swell as east winds sometimes push local windswell — though those are rare. The dominant source is still the deep Atlantic lows that barrel toward the UK. Wave heights frequently reach 1.5-2.5m, delivering that pumping, firing surf that Croyde is famous for. However, the wind ideal percentage drops to 9% — the lowest of the year. Onshore winds from the entire SW-WSW-W-WNW spectrum are rampant, so the surf is often messy and blown out. The best setups come when a fast-moving low exits and a high pressure ridge builds from the west, bringing a brief window of NW winds that clean up the swell. December has a reputation for being bitterly cold and conditions are often grim, but the swell potential is at its absolute peak. For the hardy surfer who can handle winter gear and constantly check the forecast, December can still deliver those perfect sessions when the stars align. The days are short, so timing is everything.
