When a high-pressure system settles over Scandinavia, however, it pumps in clean easterlies and those long period W swells become absolutely dreamy. The lack of consistent offshores means you'll have to be patient and pick your days, but the raw energy on offer is unmatched.
Fair Surf Season (April & September)
These transitional shoulder months see a noticeable drop in average swell size and period as the North Atlantic storm track begins to shift. April averages 1.3m at 9.5s, while September sits at 1.3m and 8.8s — still plenty of rideable swell, but the power and consistency of winter is dialed back. The upside? Ideal wind percentages nudge upward to 13-17%, as the clash between lingering winter lows and building spring/summer highs brings more frequent spells of offshore easterlies. Swell from WSW and W still dominates, but the wave heights often stay in that fun, rippable 1-1.5m range. Surfable waist to shoulder high surf is common, and with lighter winds, the crowd factor at Croyde starts to rise. These months offer the best balance between quality and comfort for intermediate surfers.
Low Surf Season (May - August)
Summer is a tough time for Croyde surfers. The Atlantic storm track retreats north, and average swell heights drop to a paltry 1.0-1.1m with periods of 7.9-8.7 seconds — choppy, short period windswell dominates. The vast majority of energy comes from the W and WSW, but without the driving low pressure systems, it's often weak and disorganized. Meanwhile, the Azores High builds, bringing more settled weather but also a persistent WSW-WNW wind component that is directly onshore at Croyde, ruining wave quality. Ideal offshore conditions from the NE-ENE quadrant are rare (10-13% of the time). When a rare frontal system pushes through or a distant tropical storm sends a pulse, there are occasional fun days, but they are few and far between. For consistent waves, this is the time to either travel or take up another sport. The water is warmest, though, and the beach is buzzing with tourists, so if you're happy with knee to waist high weak surf, it can still be a laugh.

But when a blocking high sets up over Scandinavia, the NE-ENE offshore flow pairs with that long period groundswell to produce some of the best days of the year — think hollow, powerful peaks at high tide. The NAO index is typically positive, driving storms our way, which means there's almost always swell, but you'll need to time the wind windows carefully.
