Best Surf Season (October - March)

The North Atlantic roars to life during the autumn and winter months, driving consistent, powerful groundswells toward the Moroccan coast. From October through March, average wave heights hover between 2.0 and 2.2m with long periods from 11.6 to 13.3 seconds, delivering a steady supply of pumping, heavy surf at Dracula's. The dominant swell directions shift primarily from the NW to NNW – slightly north of the optimal SW-WNW window, but the beach's WSW exposure and favorable bathymetry still capture plenty of energy, especially when the swell has west in it. Offshore winds are reliable during this period as the Azores High strengthens and pressure gradients tighten, creating frequent spells of clean, glassy conditions. With 52-60% of the time offering ideal wind from the NE, ENE, E, and ESE quadrants, these six months are unequivocally the prime window for scoring Dracula's at its best.

Fair Surf Season (April, May & September)

As the transition seasons settle in, the swell machine begins to slow but still delivers rideable waves. April and May see average heights dip to 1.8-2.0m and periods shorten into the 9-11 second range, resulting in more average, punchy surf. The swell direction becomes increasingly dominated by NNW winds, which can be a bit too north for ideal lineup configuration, though wrap-around energy still works. September sees a resurgence as autumn lows start forming in the North Atlantic, bumping periods back up to 10.1s and heights to 1.5m. However, wind quality is less consistent than in winter – ideal offshore wind percentages drop to 37-43% during these months, meaning more onshore flow from the WNW and NW can blow out the waves. Still, with careful timing, you can find solid, fun-sized sessions.

Low Surf Season (June - August)

Summer brings the quietest period to Dracula's as the North Atlantic storm track retreats northward. Average swell heights bottom out at 1.6m and periods shrink to 7.8-8.4 seconds, producing mainly choppy, low, messy conditions. The swell is almost exclusively from the NNW (over 90% of the total energy in July and August), which is far from optimal for the WSW-facing beach, resulting in weak, inconsistent waves. On the bright side, wind quality improves slightly in July and August to 43-44% ideal, with persistent thermal-driven offshore breezes from the north and east. But even with clean winds, the lack of size and period makes for a groveling session at best. For serious surf, summer is best spent chasing south swells elsewhere or waiting for the autumn revival.

November: Peak Power and Consistency

November is arguably the best month of the year at Dracula's. Average swell height is 2.0m, period 12.3 seconds, and the wind is ideal 58% of the time – one of the highest percentages of the year. Swell direction is more balanced than in winter: NNW (41.3%) and NW (28.5%) combine with WNW (6.1%) and even a trace of WSW (0.5%). This broader directional spread gives Dracula's a wider range of swell angles to work with, meaning the wave quality is consistently excellent. Offshore winds are frequent and reliable, especially from the E (11.3%), N (11.1%), ENE (7.8%), and NNE (7.9%). The North Atlantic storm track is at its most active, with deep lows churning north of the Azores and sending long-period swell trains directly into the Moroccan coast. The combination of size, period, and wind creates waves that are both powerful and clean, often with offshore winds blowing through the day. November demands a high-performance shortboard and a willingness to paddle hard – the rewards are unforgettable sessions.
