Best Surf Season (October - March)

The North Atlantic roars to life from October through March, delivering the most consistent and powerful swell to Easkey Left. Average wave heights climb well above 2m, with periods frequently exceeding 11 seconds, as deep extratropical cyclones march across the Atlantic. The dominant swell directions are from the W and WNW, but a significant portion arrives from the NW and NNW - ideal for this north-facing reef. Offshore winds from the S to SW quadrant blow around a quarter of the time, often coinciding with post-frontal high pressure, creating clean, peeling lefts. When the NAO index dips negative, the storm track aligns perfectly with this stretch of coastline, and we see pumping, heavy conditions. Onshore N winds can spoil the party, but the overall quality and size make this the prime window for charging.

Fair Surf Season (April & September)

April and September act as transitional months, offering a blend of moderate swell and improved wind consistency. Average wave heights sit around 1.7m with periods of 10-11 seconds - solid and rippable. The swell angle shifts more northerly (NW/NNW), still wrapping nicely into the bay. Ideal wind conditions (SSO-SW) occur 26-28% of the time, often lighter than in winter, yielding glassy mornings. While the storm energy is waning in spring and building in fall, these months provide a sweet spot of manageable size and clean conditions, perfect for refining technique without the intimidating winter power.

Low Surf Season (May - August)

During the summer months, the North Atlantic storm track retreats northward, leading to smaller average swell heights of 1.2-1.4m and shorter periods (8.6-9.6s). The swell direction remains predominantly from the W and NW, but the lack of energy produces mostly fun-sized groveling waves. The silver lining is the highest frequency of offshore winds (SSO-SW) of the year, between 25-30%, often accompanied by gentle sea breezes. Longboarders and beginners will enjoy the clean, small conditions, but dedicated surfers seeking power will need to wait for a rogue summer groundswell or aim for early/late season trips. Daylight hours are long, so when a pulse arrives, it can still be fun.

June: Small but Clean

June is the heart of the low surf season at Easkey Left. Average swell height is only 1.2m with a period of 8.9 seconds - short-period, weak energy. The swell direction is still favorable, with WNW (23.4%), W (18.4%), NW (16.9%), and NNW (17.1%) dominating, but most waves are under 1.5m. The wind distribution shows the highest frequencies from S and SW directions (S 6.2%, SSW 7.5%, SW 8.1%, WSW 8.2%), providing a decent chance for offshore conditions. The ideal wind percentage stays at 25%. The small, weak waves require a longboard or a fish to get the most out of them. However, the cleanest mornings can still produce fun, playful waves for those willing to work with the low energy.
