Best Surf Season (January - March)

El Huayaco is a classic Peruvian beachbreak that faces southwest, and its year-round pulse comes from the relentless Southern Ocean. But the real magic happens in the heart of the austral summer. From January through March, the dominant storm track shifts poleward, and while average swell heights dip to a still-solid 1.4-1.6m, the wind patterns offer a rare gift: a sliver of offshore potential. During these months, the coastal high-pressure ridge occasionally loosens its grip, allowing light winds from the NNE to ENE quadrant to blow across the point. It's a brief window—only 1-2% of the time—but when a long-period SSW groundswell (12-13s) aligns with those offshore breezes, the waves groom into clean, peeling lines. This is the season to chase perfection, not just power.

Fair Surf Season (April - May and October - December)

The transition months see the South Pacific storm machine revving up. April and May deliver a steady diet of SSW and SW swells, with average heights climbing to 1.7-1.8m and periods holding at a meaty 13.6s. The catch: the wind is almost always onshore or side-onshore from the south, thanks to the entrenched South Pacific High. Still, the sheer consistency and power of the swell mean that even on a choppy day, you'll find punchy, rideable waves. Similarly, October through December see the swell building again from 1.6m to 1.8m, but the wind remains stubbornly southerly. These months are for the committed surfer who values quantity over quality, though occasional lighter wind days can smooth out the bumps.

Low Surf Season (June - September)

Winter roars in full force from June to September, and El Huayaco gets pounded by the largest swell of the year. Average heights hit 1.9m, with frequent pulses in the 1.5-2.5m range and periods consistently above 12.8s—these are powerful, heavy waves. But the wind is a relentless enemy. The South Pacific High intensifies, driving persistent S and SSW winds at 10-20 kph over 85-90% of the time. This creates choppy, blown-out conditions that turn even a pumping swell into a messy battle. The ideal wind percentage drops to zero. This is a season for the big-wave charger who doesn't mind a washing machine, or for those willing to wait for a rare high-pressure trough that can briefly flip the wind offshore. For most surfers, it's a low season to look elsewhere or to enjoy the sheer spectacle of raw power.

July: Relentless and Raw

July maintains the winter momentum with an average swell height of 1.9m and a period of 12.8s. The swell is still dominated by SSW (70.1%) but the S contribution grows to 17.6%, with a healthy chunk in the 1.5-2.5m range (58%). This mix of S and SSW swells can create occasional wind shadows, but the wind is almost unilaterally from S and SSW (93.5% of the time), blowing at 10-20 kph. There is no relief from onshore flow. The waves are powerful and consistent, but the surface is almost always chopped. July is the month for the hardcore local who knows every rip and sandbar, and who can find a peak that offers a brief clean face despite the wind.
