The wind pattern is consistent with winter: ideal offshore flow at 23%, but onshore winds from W, WNW, NW, and NNW total over 34%. The frequency of strong winds (>30kph) from the SW and WSW is notable, often accompanying deep Atlantic lows. This creates challenging but rewarding surfing conditions. The positive note is that the longer period (11.7s) means the swell is powerful and can wrap around headlands, creating more options. When a ridge of high pressure builds, the winds can swing to the east, providing glassy conditions on the big swell. December is for experienced surfers seeking size and power – expect heavy, pumping waves that demand respect and a good knowledge of the lineup.
