Best Surf Season (October - March)

The North Atlantic roars to life during these months, sending consistent, powerful swell trains toward the Cornish coast. Average wave heights range from 1.6m to 2.2m with periods often exceeding 11s, providing the raw energy Fistral needs for its best waves. The dominant swell direction is from the W and WSW, which aligns perfectly with the beach's WNW exposure. However, the wind is the wildcard: onshore westerlies (W, WNW, NW) are common, and the percentage of ideal offshore flow (SW, SSW, WSW) hovers around 22-24%. When a high-pressure system sets up over Scandinavia or the UK, light easterlies can deliver glassy conditions on these powerful swells, creating epic days with long, hollow lines peeling across the bay.

Fair Surf Season (April, May, September)

Transitional months offer a compromise between winter size and summer consistency. April sees a slight drop in average swell height to 1.3m but an uptick in ideal wind frequency to 27%. September mirrors this with 1.3m swells and 24% offshore wind. The wave period drops to around 9-10s, making conditions more manageable but still punchy. Swell direction remains predominantly W, with a notable WNW component. These months are the sweet spot for intermediate surfers looking for fun, rippable waves without the winter crowds or the brutal onshore gales. Expect occasional long-period groundswells from decaying hurricanes or deep lows tracking north.

Low Surf Season (June - August)

Summer brings a distinct lull in the North Atlantic storm track. Average swell height plummets to 1.0-1.1m and periods shorten to 8-8.5s, resulting in weaker, more inconsistent surf. The wind pattern also becomes less favorable: ideal offshore flow drops to 16-18% as the dominant wind shifts from the SW and W. Most days see onshore westerlies that chop up the already small swell. While the water is warm and the sun often shines, the surf is mostly small and grovelly. Longboarders and beginners can still find fun 0.5-1m waves, but for anything with power, you'll need to time a rare groundswell with a morning offshore easterly breeze – a combination that becomes increasingly hard to find as summer progresses.

July: The Nadir

July is the lowest point of the year for surf at Fistral. Average swell height plummets to 1.0m and period to a weak 8.3s. The swell direction is overwhelmingly from the W (48.9%) and WNW (21.1%), but the vast majority of those waves are in the 0.5-1m range – barely enough for a shortboard. Waves over 1.5m account for less than 10% of the total. The wind situation is grim: ideal offshore wind drops to only 16%, the lowest of the year. The prevailing winds shift to onshore westerlies and northwesterlies, with W and WNW winds combining for over 22% of the total. These winds create messy, choppy conditions on an already small swell. The rare clean days occur when a high pressure system sits over the UK, producing light easterlies. But those days are few and far between. July is best suited for longboarding or resting – the water is warm, but the waves are mostly uninteresting.
