Best Surf Season (November - February)

Winter is the undisputed heavyweight champion at Foz do Arelho. The North Atlantic explodes with a barrage of extratropical cyclones, sending consistent, powerful swell trains directly into the NW-facing beach. Average swell heights hover around 2.5-2.8m with long periods (12-13s) ensuring plenty of punch. The ideal wind window (S through W) is at its most reliable, peaking at 32% in December and 31% in January. When a low-pressure system slides south and a high-pressure ridge builds behind it, expect offshore easterlies to groom the waves into clean, lined-up walls. This is prime time for head-high to well overhead surf.

Fair Surf Season (March, April, October)

Spring and early autumn offer a transitional window with still decent swell but lower odds of perfect conditions. March averages 2.5m with 12s periods, but ideal wind drops to 23% as the northerly trades begin to strengthen. October sees the first robust swells of the season (2.1m, 11s) and a similar 23% offshore window, though infrequent. These shoulder months can deliver great waves if you watch the charts – often a mix of leftover summer groundswell and early winter juice, with lighter winds gracing the lineup. Good, not great, but with fewer crowds.

Low Surf Season (May - September)

Summer brings a dramatic downturn in both size and quality. The Azores High settles in, reinforcing strong, onshore northerly winds (N and NNW dominate over 50% of the time) that mangle the swell. Average heights drop to 1.5-1.8m, periods shorten to 8-10s, and the ideal wind window dwindles to a paltry 4-14%. Swell directions are overwhelmingly from the NNW-NW quadrant, but these waves are often wind-shortened and chopped. Occasional smaller days with light land breezes (rare) can produce fun waist-high corners, but consistent, quality surf is virtually nonexistent. Best to save this period for flat spells or travel.

November: Prime Winter Conditions

November locks into full winter mode. Average swell height is 2.5m, period 12.1s. Swell directions are overwhelmingly from the NW (20.6%), WNW (13.5%), and NNW (15.9%), with a significant percentage of 2‑2.5m waves. The wind cooperates: ideal offshore conditions occur 27% of the time, the highest since February. North winds are still present (N 14.7%, NNE 11.6%) but the S‑SW quadrant contributes nearly 20% of the wind, often in the 10-30kph range. The storm track is active, and the NAO tends negative, steering lows toward Portugal. As a result, the beach alternates between big, powerful swells with cross‑shore to offshore winds. November delivers quality sessions with punch and consistency – one of the best months of the year.
