Best Surf Season (June - August)

The heart of the Southern Hemisphere winter brings the Indian Ocean to life. Powerful extratropical storms marching eastward below Australia generate consistent, long-period groundswells that pulse into the southwest coast. Average wave heights climb to a peak of 2.8m in July, with periods frequently exceeding 13 seconds – think pumping, heavy sets that demand respect. However, the trade-off is wind: the ideal offshore flow (east to southeast) only clocks in around 17% of the time, as westerly and northwesterly winds often accompany the same low-pressure systems. The savvy surfer will target the windows between fronts when a high-pressure ridge settles over the Bight, delivering light east winds and glassy conditions. Fair Surf Season (April - May & September - October)

These transitional months strike a balance between swell size and wind quality. During autumn (April-May), the ocean is still charged by winter precursors, with average swell heights around 2.0-2.3m and periods of 12-13 seconds. Wind statistics show a higher frequency of favourable offshore directions – April leads the year with 28% ideal wind, often from the SE to SSE. This combo produces solid, rippable waves with cleaner faces. Spring (September-October) mirrors this, with swell slowly easing from winter's peak but still averaging 2.2-2.6m and periods above 12.8s. While wind quality dips slightly (18-19% ideal), the mixing of lingering swells and emerging easterly flows can create long, powerful rides without the winter crowds. These shoulder seasons offer the best trade-off between size and shape.

Low Surf Season (November - March)

Australia's summer and early autumn see a lull in swell activity as the storm track retreats southward. Average wave heights drop to 1.8-1.9m and periods shorten to around 12 seconds, yielding mostly fun-sized, groveling waves. The predominant swell direction remains SSW-SW, which is side-on to the WNW-facing beach, reducing the quality of the wave face. Ideal wind percentages are at their annual lows (15-20%), and the prevailing sea breeze patterns (often from the SW to W in the afternoon) can chop up conditions quickly. Early mornings with light offshore E to SE winds are the best bet for a small, clean session. Still, for those willing to wait, occasional pulses from distant storms can break the monotony, but consistency is lacking. Overall, these months are best suited for longboarders and beginners unless a proper winter-like front slips north.

October: Spring Swing – Cleaner Faces, Smaller Sets

October sees a noticeable drop in average swell height to 2.2m, with periods still solid at 12.9s. The swell remains driven by SW (40.1%) and WSW (15.4%) directions, but the proportion of W (2.6%) and WNW (0.5%) diminishes as the westerly storm track weakens. Wind ideal percentage dips to 18%, but the character of the wind changes: the frequency of light winds (0-10 kph) from the east increases, providing more clean, small mornings. The dominant wind directions are from SSE (11.6%), S (11.3%), and SSW (11.2%) – all side-offshore or offshore for the WNW-facing beach. With swell heights mostly in the 1.5-2.5m range (over 70% of total), this is fun, rippable surfing. The wave quality is often high due to the long periods (12-15s) and clean winds. October is a great month for intermediate surfers to get their fill of solid waves without the intimidation of winter's biggest days. The consistency is there, and the crowds are thinning.
