Best Surf Season (December - March)

During the heart of the Indonesian wet season, Inside Rights comes alive with consistent swell and the most reliable offshore wind patterns of the year. The average wave height sits around 1.5m with long periods of 12-13s, providing powerful, rippable waves. The wind is ideal over 30-40% of the time, thanks to the strong influence of the Asian monsoon bringing winds from the north and northwest quadrants. This is the prime window for clean, lined-up surf at this south-facing reef.

Fair Surf Season (April, May, October, November)

These transitional months offer a mixed bag. April and May see a ramp-up in swell energy as the Southern Ocean storms start firing, but the wind becomes more unpredictable. While the wind is ideal only around 25-30% of the time, the increasing swell size and period (often over 14s) mean that when a cold front passes or a high-pressure system sets up, you can score pumping, long-period groundswell with light winds. October and November are the reverse, with swell starting to build again but wind still dominated by the southeast trades, making quality surf less frequent.

Low Surf Season (June - September)

The dry season brings the largest and most powerful swell of the year, with average heights exceeding 2m and periods consistently over 14s. However, this is also when the southeast trade winds are strongest and most persistent, blowing directly onshore (from the SE and SSE) over 80% of the time. The result is often challenging, choppy conditions that rarely allow the long-period swell to reveal its full potential. For the dedicated surfer willing to battle the wind or find a sheltered corner, there can be isolated moments of glory, but generally, this is a low surf season for quality at Inside Rights.

July: Big Swell, Tough Wind

July is the peak of the dry season and the swell is pumping – average 2.0m, period 14.5s. Swell directions are split between S (37.5%), SSW (44.0%), and even SSE (6.3%) with a significant portion in the 1.5-2.5m range. However, the trade winds are at their fiercest, with ideal offshore wind at only 13%. The wind is predominantly from the SE (46.8%) and SSE (14.2%), creating choppy, blown-out conditions. For the determined surfer, a dawn patrol with a light wind may offer a few clean sets before the onshore flow kicks in.
