Best Surf Season (June - September)

The southwest monsoon unleashes its fury across the Indian Ocean, generating consistent south-southwest groundswell that marches right into this east-southeast facing reef pass. Average wave heights hover in the 1.2-1.3m range with periods steadily climbing into the 9-second zone – that's punchy, rippable juice. Meanwhile, persistent westerly winds (W, WNW, NW) blow offshore, grooming the face into clean walls. These months deliver the highest reliability of the year, with frequent sessions in the fun-to-solid category.

Fair Surf Season (May and October)

Shoulder months of the monsoon see a transition in both swell and wind. Swell from the south-southwest is still present but often mixed with less favorable directions, and wave heights average around 1.1m. Wind becomes more variable, but a solid chunk of time still offers offshore westerlies. Conditions can be excellent when a good swell lines up, but consistency drops – so pick your days wisely.

Low Surf Season (November - April)

The northeast monsoon dominates, bringing onshore winds from the east and northeast that chop up the surface. Swell is predominantly short-period (7-8s) and small (0.8-1.0m) from the east-northeast, which both opposes the optimal swell direction and blows directly onshore. While the occasional west swell or light wind window can salvage a session, the overall quality is poor. Most days you’ll be fighting bumpy, low-energy conditions.

January: Peak of the Northeast Monsoon

The trade winds are in full swing, with winds from the NE (37%) and ENE (33%) blasting across the Maldives. That puts the wind squarely onshore at Kate’s, killing wave faces for 87% of the month. Swell is almost entirely from the ENE (61.5%) and E (23.7%) – directions that not only land onshore but also wrap in with short, weak period (avg 7.1s). Wave heights average 1.1m, with most energy in the 1-1.5m range, but the texture is choppy and disorganized. A few rare WNW/NW wind shifts can salvage a session, but expect mostly poor surf.
