Best Surf Season (June - September)

The southwest monsoon unleashes its fury across the Indian Ocean, generating consistent south-southwest groundswell that marches right into this east-southeast facing reef pass. Average wave heights hover in the 1.2-1.3m range with periods steadily climbing into the 9-second zone – that's punchy, rippable juice. Meanwhile, persistent westerly winds (W, WNW, NW) blow offshore, grooming the face into clean walls. These months deliver the highest reliability of the year, with frequent sessions in the fun-to-solid category.

Fair Surf Season (May and October)

Shoulder months of the monsoon see a transition in both swell and wind. Swell from the south-southwest is still present but often mixed with less favorable directions, and wave heights average around 1.1m. Wind becomes more variable, but a solid chunk of time still offers offshore westerlies. Conditions can be excellent when a good swell lines up, but consistency drops – so pick your days wisely.

Low Surf Season (November - April)

The northeast monsoon dominates, bringing onshore winds from the east and northeast that chop up the surface. Swell is predominantly short-period (7-8s) and small (0.8-1.0m) from the east-northeast, which both opposes the optimal swell direction and blows directly onshore. While the occasional west swell or light wind window can salvage a session, the overall quality is poor. Most days you’ll be fighting bumpy, low-energy conditions.

March: Transition Begins, Wind Improves

March sees the first real shift – offshore wind potential jumps to 41% as westerly and northwesterly flows become more common (WNW 7%, NW 8%, NNW 7.5%). Swell, however, shifts toward the southeast (SE 29%, SSE 14%) and south (S 3.8%). These directions are not ideal for Kate’s, and wave heights drop to an average of just 0.8m. Periods creep up to 8.3s, hinting at better pulse energy from the Southern Ocean. You’ll get cleaner conditions when the wind plays ball, but the swell lacks size and direction. Mixed bag, with some fun grovelers on the better days.
