Best Surf Season (October – March)

The Japan Sea roars to life during the colder half of the year, driven by the strengthening Siberian High and a parade of extratropical cyclones tracking across the Sea of Japan. From October through March, Kitaizumi sees its most consistent and powerful surf. The average wave period climbs into the 9-10 second range, often extending into the long-period class, and the dominant swell directions from the east-northeast through east-southeast align perfectly with the beach's east-facing orientation. Offshore winds from the west and northwest prevail during these months, with ideal wind conditions occurring 36-46% of the time. When a strong low-pressure system sets up west of the Japanese archipelago, it funnels long-period groundswell directly into the coast, producing punchy, well-shaped waves in the fun 1-1.5m range and occasionally pumping 1.5-2.5m sets. This is the peak window for quality surf at Kitaizumi.

Fair Surf Season (April – June)

As spring progresses, the atmospheric pattern shifts. The Siberian High weakens, and the Aleutian Low retreats, leading to a gradual decline in both swell size and consistency. April through June still offers rideable surf, but the average wave period drops to 8-8.8 seconds, indicating shorter-period, weaker swell. The prevailing swell direction becomes more east to southeast, which still hits the beach but with less power. Offshore wind frequency remains decent around 30-39%, though spring often brings a mix of conditions. Expect many days of fun-sized, small 0.5-1m waves that are perfect for longboards or grovelers, with occasional pulses of 1-1.5m when a late-season storm tracks through. It's a transitional period — surfable but less consistent than the prime months.

Low Surf Season (July – September)

Summer in the Sea of Japan is dominated by the North Pacific High and weak pressure gradients. From July through September, Kitaizumi experiences its smallest and weakest waves. The average swell height hovers around 0.9-1.2m, but the wave period drops to 8.1-8.8 seconds and the swell direction is almost entirely from the east-southeast through southeast, which, while still on the beach, lacks the fetch and power of winter groundswell. Offshore wind frequency falls to its lowest at 30-32%, and the wind patterns become more fickle — often southerly sea breezes or light easterly onshore flows that mess up the wave faces. Most days deliver small, choppy 0.5-1m conditions, with rare pulses from tropical storms or distant typhoons adding some extra size but also often bringing unruly winds. It's a low season best suited for beginners or those happy to grovel on a log.

November: Prime Time Arrives

November sees the full winter pattern lock in. Average swell height is 1.0m (actually slightly lower than October due to fewer tropical pulses), but period is 9.2s — solid groundswell. Swell direction is east (20.7%) and east-southeast (20.3%), along with a healthy east-northeast (15.5%) and northeast (9%). The wind is ideal a whopping 46% of the time, the highest of the year, with northwest winds (WNW 14.2%, NW 15%) dominating. Wave heights are balanced, with a good mix of 0.5-1m (44%), 1-1.5m (25%), and 1.5-2m (8%). This is one of the best months for consistent, clean surf at Kitaizumi. The combination of powerful storms in the Sea of Japan and frequent offshore winds creates plenty of quality sessions.
