Best Surf Season (March – May)

The transition from the wet to the dry season brings Kuta’s most consistent combination of solid, long-period SSW groundswell and reliable offshore winds. With average wave heights hovering between 1.5 and 1.7m and periods often exceeding 13 seconds, the setup is ideal for rippable, powerful surf. The percentage of offshore wind (N, NNE, NE, ENE) peaks in April at 56% and remains high in March and May, meaning clean morning glass-offs are common. This is the window when the entire bay lines up with well-shaped, peeling waves that work from mid-tide through to high tide.

Fair Surf Season (June – August)

The southern hemisphere winter unleashes its strongest groundswell, with average heights pushing 2.0m and periods up to 14.4s. The swell is absolutely pumping—consistent, powerful, and often XL. However, the trade winds strengthen from the southeast (ESE, SE), blowing cross-shore and occasionally onshore, which degrades the surface quality. Ideal wind percentages drop to 20–36%, making it a gamble on wind direction. Early mornings and late afternoons can still deliver clean, heavy waves, especially when a ridge of high pressure nudges the wind toward the north. Expect some chop and current, but also adrenaline.

Low Surf Season (September – February)

This period is dominated by the monsoon transition and stronger onshore flow from the west and northwest. Swell energy remains moderate to good (1.5–1.9m, 12–14s), but the wind is frequently out of the W, WNW, or WSW—all onshore for Kuta’s SSW-facing beach. Ideal wind percentages bottom out at just 17% in September and October. While the Indian Ocean still produces long-period swells, the surface is often messy and choppy. The best chance for clean waves comes during rare southerly swell events coinciding with a brief northerly wind shift. Surf is rideable, but don’t expect perfection.

May: Still Firing, More Power

May continues the excellent run. Average swell height climbs to 1.7m with a period of 14.1s—thick, powerful lines. Swell direction is dominated by SSW (56.0%) and S (29.3%), both optimal. The wave height distribution shows a significant amount in the 1.5–2m range (28% SSW, 17.2% S) and a solid 14.1% of SSW swells over 2m. Ideal wind remains strong at 47%. The trade winds from the east-southeast (ESE at 57.8%, SE at 20.9%) blow consistently offshore, keeping the surface glassy. The swell is bigger than April, so expect more power and occasional overhead sets. Surf quality remains high, though the stronger southeast winds can create slight sideshore texture later in the day. Early morning is prime time.
