The Ionian Sea awakens during the autumn and winter months, as the North Atlantic storm track shifts southward and fuels the Mediterranean with consistent, long-fetch westerly swells. From October through March, average wave heights climb to 0.9-1.1m with periods hovering in the 6-6.5s range — punchy, rideable waves that wrap into Lagkouvardos's west-facing shore. The offshore wind window (NW-WSW) is most reliable during this period, with ideal wind frequencies reaching 24% in January and 25% in December, when high-pressure systems over the Balkans send crisp, offshore breezes. While onshore winds from the WSW-WNW quadrant can occasionally spoil the fun, the frequency of well-aligned, clean conditions is at its annual peak, making this the prime window for scoring fun, rippable surf.

Fair Surf Season (April & September)

Spring and early autumn offer transitional windows where swell energy is on the wane or building. April sees average wave height drop to 0.7m with a short period of 5.5s — small and weak, but occasional late-season low-pressure systems can still deliver the occasional 1-1.5m pulse from the WSW-WNW. Ideal wind frequencies fall to 13%, as the dominant NW-NNW winds (often 20-40kph) kick up cross-shore chop. September sees a similar pattern: average height 0.5m, period 4.7s, with only 7% ideal wind. However, the first autumn storms can inject some longer-period energy, providing brief windows of good conditions between lingering summer high-pressure spells.

Low Surf Season (May - August)

Summer is the flat season at Lagkouvardos. Average wave heights bottom out at 0.5m with periods under 5s from May through August, meaning the vast majority of days produce small, choppy, and mostly unsurfable conditions. The Mediterranean summer ridge sits squarely over the region, suppressing storm activity and funneling strong NW-NNW winds that blow in the 20-50kph range — creating messy, onshore textures for any swell that does arrive. Ideal wind frequencies drop to a dismal 3% in June through August. Only the rare, tiny groundswell from a distant summer storm or a brief morning offshore breeze offers any hope. For most surfers, this is a time to clean the board and wait for autumn.

February: Consistency Continues

February maintains robust swell activity with an average height of 1.0m and period 6.4s. The dominant swell directions remain WSW (18.9%), NW (16.0%), W (13.4%), and WNW (12.9%), keeping the west-facing beach well-supplied. Wind patterns shift slightly: ideal wind frequency drops to 21%, as NW and NNW winds increase (27% combined) — these are mostly cross-shore to cross-offshore, as NW falls within the optimal offshore sector (NO = NW). However, onshore winds from SW-WNW still account for over 20% of wind observations, often accompanying the arrival of deeper low-pressure systems. The potential for pumping 1.5-2.5m days exists when a strong Atlantic low stalls over the Adriatic and westerly winds clock around to offshore at daybreak. February is a solid month for dedicated surfers.
