Offshore winds from N, NW, and NNW are most frequent, especially under the influence of the Azores High's northern edge or post-frontal high pressure. This is prime time for firing, rippable waves in the 1-2.5m range, with occasional XXL days when a deep low-pressure system stalls off the coast. Fair Surf Season (April - May & September)

As the seasons shift, the swell pulse becomes more intermittent. April and May see average wave heights drop to 0.9-1.1m and periods shorten to 9-10s, but south-oriented swells (ESE, SE, S) become more prominent—perfect for the spot's optimal swell window. Offshore wind consistency holds up around 32% of the time, mainly from NNW and NW. September is a standout shoulder month: the ocean warms, daylight lingers, and the first whispers of autumn lows bring back longer-period WNW swell (10.3s avg) while wind ideal percentages climb to 39%. Summer in Lagos is dominated by weak, short-period windswell and a persistent thermal low pattern. Average swell heights bottom out at 0.7-0.8m with periods dipping to 8-9s, and the swell direction is overwhelmingly from NW and NNW—a direction that hits the spot at a less-than-ideal angle, requiring a favorable refraction. Onshore southerly winds (S, SSO, SO) become more common, especially during the afternoon sea breeze, reducing the window for clean waves to just 24-30% of the time. You'll likely be groveling on small, crumbly waves under 0.5m most days, but occasional pulses of S or SE swell can provide a brief fun-sized session for those willing to chase the early-morning glass-off.

July: Peak Summer Flatness

July is the bottom of the barrel for surf in Lagos. Average swell height is a mere 0.8m and period a short 8.0s. Swell direction is almost exclusively from NW (61.5%) and WNW (20.5%), with a tiny fraction from E/ESE (7.3%). This is windswell, not groundswell, and it barely reaches the bay with any shape. Wave heights are mostly 0.5-1m (a whopping 74.6% of all swell) and 0-0.5m (7.3%). Winds are dominated by NNW (42.0%) and NW (27.4%), strong and consistent due to the summer thermal low, but these winds are actually offshore—yet they create a lot of texture because they blow directly against the weak NW swell. Ideal wind frequency plummets to 24%. The best chance for a wave comes from a rare SE or S swell, but even then, the period is too short for power. Expect small, crumbly waves under knee-to-waist high at best. This is the time to explore other activities or enjoy the Algarve's beautiful beaches without a board.
