Best Surf Season (October - March)

The North Atlantic kicks into high gear during these months, delivering a steady diet of powerful, long-period groundswells that wrap beautifully into Lagos' southeast-facing nooks. Average swell heights hover around 1.2-1.4m with periods often exceeding 12s, and the dominant swell directions from WNW and NW bend around the coast, offering plenty of juice. Offshore winds from N, NW, and NNW are most frequent, especially under the influence of the Azores High's northern edge or post-frontal high pressure. This is prime time for firing, rippable waves in the 1-2.5m range, with occasional XXL days when a deep low-pressure system stalls off the coast. Expect clean conditions roughly one-third of the month.

Fair Surf Season (April - May & September)

As the seasons shift, the swell pulse becomes more intermittent. April and May see average wave heights drop to 0.9-1.1m and periods shorten to 9-10s, but south-oriented swells (ESE, SE, S) become more prominent—perfect for the spot's optimal swell window. Offshore wind consistency holds up around 32% of the time, mainly from NNW and NW. September is a standout shoulder month: the ocean warms, daylight lingers, and the first whispers of autumn lows bring back longer-period WNW swell (10.3s avg) while wind ideal percentages climb to 39%. Expect fun-sized, groveling to solid waves on the better days, especially when a S-SSW swell lines up with a northerly breeze.

Low Surf Season (June - August)

Summer in Lagos is dominated by weak, short-period windswell and a persistent thermal low pattern. Average swell heights bottom out at 0.7-0.8m with periods dipping to 8-9s, and the swell direction is overwhelmingly from NW and NNW—a direction that hits the spot at a less-than-ideal angle, requiring a favorable refraction. Onshore southerly winds (S, SSO, SO) become more common, especially during the afternoon sea breeze, reducing the window for clean waves to just 24-30% of the time. You'll likely be groveling on small, crumbly waves under 0.5m most days, but occasional pulses of S or SE swell can provide a brief fun-sized session for those willing to chase the early-morning glass-off.

June: Summer Lull

June ushers in the true summer lull. Average swell height drops to 0.8m and period to 8.9s. The swell direction is overwhelmingly from NW (43.1%) and WNW (30.1%), with a notable 10% from W. These directions are far from ideal for Lagos' southeast exposure, as they require significant refraction to wrap in. The wave height distribution is heavily skewed to 0.5-1m (57.9% of all swell), with very little above 1.5m. Wind conditions are dominated by a strong NNW (31.2%) and NW (24.8%) flow, which is offshore, but the wind is often moderate to strong (20-40kph), making the ocean bumpy. Ideal wind frequency falls to 30%. The combination of small, weak windswell and frequent strong offshore winds that actually create bumpy conditions (since they blow against the swell) means surf quality is generally poor. On the rare day with a southerly swell and light winds, you might find a few fun waist-high waves, but expect mostly micro surf.
