Best Surf Season (October - March)

La Puntilla’s surf calendar peaks during the North Atlantic winter, when powerful extratropical storms send long-period groundswells roaring toward Hispaniola. Average wave heights climb to 1.5-1.6m with periods often exceeding 9s, and the occasional northwest swell (NNO to O) can unload quality waves on this northeast-facing beach. The key challenge remains the persistent trade wind regime—offshore conditions from the SW quad are scarce, averaging only 7-14% of the time. Still, when a cold front clears the trades and the wind clocks into the SSW or WSW, these months offer the best chance for groomed, punchy surf.

Fair Surf Season (April & September)

Transitional months bridge the winter peak and summer lull. Average swell heights drop to the 1.2-1.3m range, and periods shorten to 8.5-9s. The dominant swell direction shifts fully into the east-northeast (ENE), which is less than ideal for this setup. Wind consistency improves slightly for offshore flows in September (11% ideal), but overall variability means you’ll need to chase small windows. These months can produce fun, rippable waves if a tropical system or late-season cold front aligns properly.

Low Surf Season (May - August)

Summer sees La Puntilla at its most sluggish. The North Atlantic storm track retreats, leaving weak, short-period trade wind swell from the E and ENE as the primary source. Average heights hover around 1.1-1.2m with periods between 7-8s, resulting in mushy, choppy conditions. To make matters worse, onshore trades from the E and ESE dominate over 75% of the time, leaving ideal offshore winds from the SW in the single digits (2-7%). This is the time to explore other spots or wait for a rare tropical disturbance to break the pattern.

December: Peak Season Potential

December matches January in average height (1.6m) and period (9.4s), making it the joint peak of the season. Swell direction is dominated by ENE (42.9%), NE (32.5%), and NNE (12.3%), with a small but important contribution from N (2.1%) and NNW (1.3%). The offshore wind percentage is only 7%, but the frequency and strength of passing fronts increase dramatically. When a cold front sweeps through, it can shift the wind into the SW for several hours to a day, allowing the excellent north-to-northwest swell to wrap in cleanly. Those windows produce the wave of the year: powerful, well-shaped lines that barrel on the better days. Persistence pays off in December.
