The dominant swell direction shifts fully into the east-northeast (ENE), which is less than ideal for this setup. Wind consistency improves slightly for offshore flows in September (11% ideal), but overall variability means you’ll need to chase small windows. These months can produce fun, rippable waves if a tropical system or late-season cold front aligns properly.

Low Surf Season (May - August)

Summer sees La Puntilla at its most sluggish. The North Atlantic storm track retreats, leaving weak, short-period trade wind swell from the E and ENE as the primary source. Average heights hover around 1.1-1.2m with periods between 7-8s, resulting in mushy, choppy conditions. To make matters worse, onshore trades from the E and ESE dominate over 75% of the time, leaving ideal offshore winds from the SW in the single digits (2-7%). This is the time to explore other spots or wait for a rare tropical disturbance to break the pattern.

May: Trade Wind Slump Begins

May brings the onset of the summer low season. Average swell height sinks to 1.2m and period to 8.1s. Swell direction becomes overwhelmingly eastern, with ENE (42.6%) and E (29.8%) combining for over 72%. These are classic trade wind swells—short period, weak, and prone to chop. Offshore wind percentages improve slightly to 11% as afternoon sea breezes occasionally give way to early-morning SW flows, but storms are rare. Surfable conditions are limited to waist-high, groveling waves, making this a month for the dedicated loggers or those willing to wait for a rare pulse.
