Best Surf Season (December - March)

The heart of winter delivers the most consistent and powerful swell to La Sud. The North Atlantic fires off a relentless series of deep low-pressure systems, sending long-period groundswells (12-13s) aimed squarely at this WNW-facing beach. Average wave heights hover in the 1.5-1.8m range, often pushing into the 'pumping' or 'heavy' category. Equally important, the prevailing wind pattern shifts. High-pressure systems over central Europe and the Azores generate a persistent easterly flow, providing clean offshore conditions that groom the waves to perfection. Ideal wind frequencies peak at 37-39%, turning the lineup into a surfer’s dream.

Fair Surf Season (October - November, April)

The shoulder months offer a mixed bag of quality waves, but with less consistency. October and November see the autumn transition kick in — swell size builds (1.3-1.6m) and period lengthens (11-12s), yet the wind regime can be fickle. A higher chance of westerly winds (onshore) limits the number of clean sessions, though ideal wind percentages still reach 35-36%. April brings a lingering winter energy with average 1.2m swell and 11s period, but the wind becomes more variable; ideal wind drops to 25%. Expect some excellent days when a high-pressure ridge locks in an east wind, but also plenty of lumpy, wind-affected days.

Low Surf Season (May - September)

Summer at La Sud is a slow grind. Swell levels drop considerably (0.9-1.1m average) and periods shorten to 9-10s, resulting in mostly small, weak waves that often struggle to break cleanly. The predominant wind directions swing into the west and north-west, which are onshore or side-shore, degrading the wave face. Ideal wind frequencies fall to 15-20%, meaning most days are mushy or choppy. However, occasional pulses of long-period southern hemi swell or a tropical storm can fire up the spot for a few hours. For the dedicated surfer, early mornings with a light land breeze offer the best windows, but overall this is a time for groveling boards or seeking other breaks.

March: Late-Winter Gold

March sees a slight drop in average swell height to 1.6m and period to 12.2s, but the quality remains high. The swell direction mix shifts a bit — WNW (40.3%) and NW (40.6%) are now nearly equal, with NW taking a slightly larger share. This is still excellent for La Sud. Wave heights are mostly in the 0.5-2.0m range, with a good number of 1.0-1.5m 'fun' waves. However, ideal wind conditions decrease to 30%, indicating that offshore flow is less consistent. Winds from the E (6.6%) and ESE (6.2%) are still present but weaker, while westerly quadrants (W at 10.3%, WNW at 9.1%, NW at 8.5%) become more dominant. This means onshore and cross-shore winds are more frequent, chopping up the surface. Still, the longer days and reliable winter swell make March a prime month for those willing to pick the days when a transient high pressure delivers clean east winds.
