Best Surf Season (December - March)

The heart of winter delivers the most consistent and powerful swell to La Sud. The North Atlantic fires off a relentless series of deep low-pressure systems, sending long-period groundswells (12-13s) aimed squarely at this WNW-facing beach. Average wave heights hover in the 1.5-1.8m range, often pushing into the 'pumping' or 'heavy' category. Equally important, the prevailing wind pattern shifts. High-pressure systems over central Europe and the Azores generate a persistent easterly flow, providing clean offshore conditions that groom the waves to perfection. Ideal wind frequencies peak at 37-39%, turning the lineup into a surfer’s dream.

Fair Surf Season (October - November, April)

The shoulder months offer a mixed bag of quality waves, but with less consistency. October and November see the autumn transition kick in — swell size builds (1.3-1.6m) and period lengthens (11-12s), yet the wind regime can be fickle. A higher chance of westerly winds (onshore) limits the number of clean sessions, though ideal wind percentages still reach 35-36%. April brings a lingering winter energy with average 1.2m swell and 11s period, but the wind becomes more variable; ideal wind drops to 25%. Expect some excellent days when a high-pressure ridge locks in an east wind, but also plenty of lumpy, wind-affected days.

Low Surf Season (May - September)

Summer at La Sud is a slow grind. Swell levels drop considerably (0.9-1.1m average) and periods shorten to 9-10s, resulting in mostly small, weak waves that often struggle to break cleanly. The predominant wind directions swing into the west and north-west, which are onshore or side-shore, degrading the wave face. Ideal wind frequencies fall to 15-20%, meaning most days are mushy or choppy. However, occasional pulses of long-period southern hemi swell or a tropical storm can fire up the spot for a few hours. For the dedicated surfer, early mornings with a light land breeze offer the best windows, but overall this is a time for groveling boards or seeking other breaks.

May: Summer Lull Begins

May ushers in the summer doldrums. Average swell height falls to just 1.0m and period to 10.1s, resulting in weak, short-period waves. The swell direction is still overwhelmingly from NW (50.1%) and WNW (40.8%), but wave heights are mostly below 1.5m (98% in the 0-1.5m range), with only a tiny fraction exceeding 1.5m. This means the surf is generally small and mushy — fine for a longboard or groveler, but lacking power. Worse, ideal wind conditions drop to just 20%. Winds are predominantly from the west and north: W (12.8%), WNW (15.0%), NW (13.9%), and NNW (12.2%) dominate, all of which blow onshore or side-shore and degrade the wave quality. Occasional pulses from the south can bring cleaner conditions, but they are rare. The best bet is to chase early morning sessions with a light easterly breeze or hope for a distant south swell that can sneak around the corner.
