Best Surf Season (May - August)

Fair Surf Season (March - April & September - October)

These transitional months bring a mix of quality and compromise. March and April still see decent S swell from late-season storms, with average heights around 1.2-1.4m and periods in the 10-11 second range. However, the wind is more variable. Frontal systems passing south of Brazil can swing the breeze onshore from the S or SE, dropping the ideal wind percentage to around 48%. When a high-pressure system settles over the continent, expect light offshore northerlies and clean, fun waves. September and October see a similar pattern – the beginning of the spring transition. Swell remains solid in September (1.5m avg) but onshore winds become more frequent as the ITCZ shifts. October is the toughest month, with only 38% offshore wind. Patience and a keen eye on the forecast are key during these months.

Low Surf Season (November - February)

Summer settles in over Rio, and the surf takes a mellow turn. The South Atlantic storm track weakens and shifts poleward, resulting in smaller, shorter-period swell. Average heights drop to 1.1-1.3m and periods hover around 9.5-10 seconds. While there are still pulses of S swell from occasional cold fronts, they are less frequent and smaller. On the bright side, summer also brings a higher chance of light offshore winds, especially in December and January when the wind blows from the north up to 52% of the time. The waves become fun-sized and rippable, perfect for logging or groveling on a shortboard, but don't expect any pumping, firing days. It's a great time for beginners or for those looking to work on their technique in smaller, cleaner conditions.

June is the peak of winter and arguably the best month of the year for consistent, high-quality surf at Leblon. The average swell height holds at a solid 1.4m, but the period is the longest of the year at 11.1s, indicating powerful, long-period groundswell. S direction leads the way with 33.2% of the swell, and the 1.5-2m range sees 11.7% from the S alone. SSW swell also brings 5.4% in the 1.5-2m range and 4.0% in 2-2.5m. The wind is frequently from the north (N, NNE, NE) and tends to be light, creating clean, groomed wave faces. This is the month to call in sick and chase the swell. Expect firing, overhead conditions on the regular, with long, walled-up waves perfect for carving.
