Best Surf Season (May – August)

Winter delivers the goods at Lennox Head. As high-pressure systems track north across the Tasman Sea, they usher in a consistent stream of cool, offshore SW to WNW winds that groom the ocean surface to perfection. With ideal wind conditions blowing 58-70% of the time, the combination of powerful E to SSE groundswells and clean offshore airflow creates peak surfing conditions. Average wave heights hover around 1.5-1.7m with periods clocking in at 9.3-9.6s, delivering punchy, rippable walls that make the most of Lennox's sand-bottom points and beach breaks. This is when the Point truly comes alive.

Fair Surf Season (April & September)

April and September act as transitional windows, offering a solid mix of swell and wind. In April, the autumn change brings a drop in northerly winds and a rise in offshore flow – ideal wind jumps to 47% – while swell heights remain consistent at 1.7m from the E-ESE. September sees the spring transition, with ideal wind at 45%, though a higher incidence of northerly onshore flow (up to 25% from N-NNE) can chop things up. When the wind aligns, these months deliver fun, long-period groundswell from the SE-SSE that wraps into the bay.

Low Surf Season (October – March)

Summer and early autumn are challenging at Lennox Head. The dominant wind regime shifts to northerly and northeasterly directions, blowing directly onshore and ruining wave quality for extended periods. Ideal offshore wind plummets to 20-32% during these months. While swell energy remains present – especially from the NE to E corridors (October through March sees 50-65% of total swell from these optimal directions) – the persistent onshore flow keeps conditions messy, short-period, and choppy. Only brief windows of westerly change, often following a trough or low-pressure system, can briefly salvage a session. For the average surfer, this is a waiting game.

June: Peak Winter – Offshore Nirvana

June is the absolute peak of winter reliability at Lennox Head. With ideal offshore wind blowing a whopping 70% of the time, this is the month to plan a trip. The wind rose shows a beautiful distribution of SW (10.8%), WSW (11.5%), W (11.7%), and WNW (6.9%) – all in the 0-20kph range. These westerly winds wrap around Point and produce glassy, offshore conditions across the whole beach. Swell is predominantly from the SSE (23.7%) and SE (17.9%), but also sees a significant portion from S (13.0%) – which, while not the most angle-optimal, still wraps in with good power. Average wave height is 1.6m and period 9.6s, the highest period of the year. Expect consistent, powerful groundswell with clean surface conditions. This is as good as it gets.
