Average wave heights sit in the 1.6m to 1.8m range with periods often exceeding 12 seconds, translating into clean, hollow waves breaking along the beach. The wind statistics are equally promising: offshore to side-offshore breezes from the south through southwest quadrants blow over 40% of the time, creating pristine, glassy conditions. This is the prime window for experienced surfers to chase pumping, firing sets at this exposed WNW-facing beach.

Fair Surf Season (April & October)

These shoulder months mark the transition between the active winter pattern and the sluggish summer regime. April sees the last of the strong winter storms, with average swell dropping to 1.2m and periods slipping to 11 seconds. While still rideable, the consistency decreases, and the window for offshore winds narrows to about 29% of the time. October, conversely, is the awakening month: the first autumn lows begin to spin up, boosting average wave heights back to 1.3m and periods to 11.3s. Ideal wind percentages jump to 41% as the thermal gradient reestablishes. These months offer a mixed bag – expect some quality days mixed with flat spells or less favorable wind, but the potential for excellent sessions remains.

Low Surf Season (May - September)

Summer arrives with a dramatic shift in the atmospheric steering currents. The jet stream retreats northward, and the North Atlantic storm track weakens considerably. Swell heights dwindle to an average of 0.9m to 1.1m from May through September, with wave periods hovering around 9 to 10 seconds – typical of weak, short-period windswell. The dominant wind pattern becomes onshore, with westerly and northwesterly breezes prevailing. Ideal offshore wind percentages plummet to between 16% and 29%, making clean waves a rare commodity. During this period, Les Cavaliers is best suited for longboarders and beginners looking for small, fun-sized waves in the early morning windows when local land breezes can occasionally offer a few hours of groomed conditions. The upside? Warmer water and lighter crowds.

May: Summer's Slow Onset

May signals the true beginning of the low surf season. Average swell height falls to 1.0m and the period shortens to 10.1s, characteristic of low-energy windswell rather than powerful groundswell. The swell remains dominated by NW and WNW (over 90% combined), but nearly all of it is below 1.5m. Ideal offshore wind plummets to just 23% of the time, with onshore westerlies and northwesterlies becoming the norm. The thermal low over the Iberian Peninsula often draws in a persistent sea breeze from the northwest, further degrading conditions. Early mornings can still offer a brief window of cleaner surf when the land breeze kicks in, but generally, May is best suited for small-wave gear and longboards.
