Best Surf Season (October - March)

The North Atlantic delivers its full fury during these months, with average swell heights hovering around 1.6-1.7m and periods often exceeding 12 seconds. The combination of powerful NW and NNW swells - which make up over 60% of the directional spectrum - slams directly into the NNW-facing beach, producing consistent, pumping waves in the 1.5-2.5m range. Crucially, offshore winds from the S, SSW, and SW blow over 50% of the time (peaking at 63% in December), grooming the faces into clean, hallowed lines. Low-pressure systems tracking across the Bay of Biscay fire up long-period groundswells, while high-pressure setups over the Mediterranean funnel light offshore breezes. This is prime time for charging sessions.

Fair Surf Season (April, May, September)

As the seasons transition, the raw power of winter fades, but solid opportunities remain. April sees average swell height drop to 1.3m with a period of 10.7s, and ideal wind frequency falls to 40% - still workable, especially when southerly winds align with building NW swell. May is a step down (1.0m, 9.8s, 31% ideal wind), but the long summer daylight and occasional groundswell pulses can produce fun, rippable waves in the 0.5-1.5m range. September marks the comeback: swell height climbs back to 1.1m, period to 10.2s, and offshore wind odds improve to 41%. The first autumn lows stir up the Atlantic, offering windows of clean, consistent surf before the winter peak.

Low Surf Season (June - August)

Summer is the quiet period at Los Quebrantos. Average swell heights dwindle to 0.8-0.9m, periods drop to 8.7-9.0s, and ideal wind conditions occur only 23-29% of the time. The dominant wind shifts to northerly and easterly components (onshore for this spot), ruining wave quality. Swell directions remain mostly NW and NNW, but with weak energy - most waves are in the 0.5-1m range, only suitable for groveling. Long-period groundswells are rare, and the surf is often small, choppy, and blown out. Still, persistent surfers may find fun-sized waves on the rare days when a southwesterly wind graces the coast and a small NW swell slips in.

April: Shoulder Season Consistency

April is a transition month. Average swell height drops to 1.3m, period to 10.7s - still rideable, but less consistent. NW and NNW swells dominate (39.3% NW, 27.2% NNW), delivering mostly fun-sized waves in the 1-1.5m range, with occasional 1.5-2m sets. Ideal wind conditions occur 40% of the time, with S and SSW winds combined around 7.7%. The wind rose shows a big spike in ENE winds (15.6%), which are offshore but can be gusty. The surf is best when a southerly breeze aligns with a building NW swell. Expect days of clean, rippable waves, but also flat spells as the winter storm track weakens.
